    build a trike

Theres a few trike riders here and a few more on the UK site.
I think Trikenel (or tinkerbell) on the UK site has a good write up on making his XS trike.

Well, I figured out if I turn the car rear up side down, it will travel in the right direction, but the gears are meant to rotate one way. (Helical cut gears). They will whine a bit if run backwards. It seems that the triple engine turns the opposite direction as the 11, and if so, the middle gear must be set up so that it reverses the direction of rotation. I wondered if that middle gear unit would bolt up to the 11 engine, or if the internal parts can be used to modify the 11 middle. The problem is that the driveshaft on these bikes rotates the opposite direction as the ones on most all cars. I think Trikerneil was the one that made a unit to attach behind the middle gear to change that rotation. But if the middle drive from a triple would do that, then this would be a much simpler process.

all the middle drive is more or less a 90deg angle all the rotational changes are done in the transmission

          Hi Rover,

XS11 engine runs the opposite way round to everything else 'cos the transmission has an extra shaft. ....... one extra reversal.

Bevels and shafts turn the same way on pretty much all bikes........ and (as you have figured out) the opposite way to most cars.

            Sounds Possible

The clutch basket theory for the engine noise sounds possible. I did not have this noise in my engine until I replaced the clutch. So what about the clutch basket could make a clunking noise. When I took the bike for the first ride after replacing the clutch I noticed the noise. I rode back to the shop removed the side cover, clutch packs and clutch basket and inspected for problems. I retorqued the basket replaced the clutch packs and test drove again. I have had the noise ever since and do no know why?? I installed an EBC clutch kit with new springs. What in the clutch system do you think could cause a clunking noise at idle???

              Hi Excess,

just the running clearances are enough to cause the noise; It is not a sign of a real problem.

Get a proper synch done on the carbs; if it is the "usual" clutch noise, it should go away once the carbs are sorted out.

If the noise remains, then you may have a more serious problem to trace.

The clutch noise you are hearing could be the fingers of the fiber plates rattling in the clutch basket slots. I installed a set of after market fibers and the noise showed up when I pulled the clutch in. I pull the clutch out and measure the finger and found them to be about .010" smaller that stock.

The clutch side of my bike has been more audible since putting the EBC frictions and springs in a year ago. This clutch setup has been working very well so far, so I've discounted the sound to be normal.
                  Dennyz's point might be valid.
