  • are running lights stock on a 79 standard?

i'm waiting on a left front turn signal for my 79 standard from andreas weiss, the one i have now from ebay has 2 elements in the bulb, but only has 2 wires, not 3.

it lights up like a running light as well as turn duties, but the rears are dark until i turn them on...

does anyone know if stock blinkers have running lights front or rear, if not, am i experienceing a short?

      Mason,

MRO is right, the fronts are running/turn combos, but the rears are only turn, since they are ORANGE/Yellow. IF they were Red lenses, then they would be allowed to be on all the time, but Yellow are NOT!

thanks again gents, so far so good then, hmmm. red lights

might as well think in terms of electrons in anticipation of the wiring job for my new fuse block, thanks for that Topcat, can't wait to get my greasy little hands on them.

uses to be" get rid of the lights" now it's how much more can i get, hope thats not an over 40 only concern, heck it might be a safer midlife crisis...

            Mason,
If ypu want lights, go with LED's. You can have PLENTY of light, and not use many electrons. The electrons are few and far between on the XS1100, so the LED's are a good way to be seen. I put a pair of oval truck lamps on my vetter box, in place of the 4 round lamps. I now have a brighter headlamp at idle, and I light up EVERYTHING behind me when I put on the brakes.

My 80G has no front running lights. The wires are there in the headlight bucket, but I currently have single wire/single element turn signals. It has Hazard Flashers in the front, the rear doesn't flash and parking lights on when handle bars are in the locked position. Whazzup wit dat?
If I get dual element turns for the front and back with red lens for the back, then I'd be running Headlight and 2 amber up front and Tailight, 4 in the vetter trunk and 2 red turns in the rear. Okay to the question, Aren't the rear turns supposed to flash on Hazard?
              thanks

                  News flash..Prom doesn't know everything!

                  Hey Mason,

Check out the tech tips, mods, electrical, you'll see info on just 1 of many ways to put LED's on!

Dan, yes, your rear signals should flash with the emergency flasher. IT's a separate ciruit with a separate flasher for the Emergency flashers vs. the turn signals, so you may need to do some wire chasing!?

Prom, always glad to provide some "Enlightenment" your way!
Hope this doesn't make YOU see RED?

i vaugely read about emergency flashers, and i tore through the turn switch to chase down some failed solder joint as per diverray, and saw nothing resembling hazards, what gives?

another: a little off track but, what! my rear brakes operates one front caliper? i don't see the connection;literally.

                        Mason,
On the rear brakes, you DO NOT have the front/rear connected. That is also later model bikes. I ride a '798 standard almost every day, and have a '78 here that I'm going to be working on. They are basicly the same bike.
The late '79 had the first of the tubeless rims, and the '80 went in for a lot of the other stuff.
Try to find the original fork caps for your bike. The '78 or '79 will fit. They have an adjustment on them that will help you with the preload on the new springs.(this is from your other thread)
