Snow, I had a similar problem about a year ago when I installed the; "cones". I found my trouble to be on the filters that I was trying to use was a big shoulder on the intake where the filter slides over the carb air horn. This shoulder was so big that; A. it restricted the air intake. Acted as a manuel choke was partial on at high speed. B. The shoulder butted up against several (4 I think) air metering holes around the outside of the carb air horn. This disrupted several curcuits within the carb.
Bike ran like S--t on them. No amount of float hight changes or jet changes helped.
Took the cones off, went back to stock jets and stock air box and the bike ran the way it should.

I have 4 K&N cones on my 80 Beast, and she runs fine even though I didn't re-jet her. She shows a nice tan color on the plugs so I think all is well. I really like the sound they make when you suck lotsa air through them, and the carb bank comes off in about 3 minutes. I wouldn't go back to the stock airbox unless I was after a really quiet bike.
Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.

        Check out these,

I ordered a set for my bike but they won't be here in time for the rally. Anyway I think they're a better deal than the ones usually seen on eBay.

I Have my cones in hand, just haven't installed them. I am still in the middle of trying to put Goldwing bags and trunk on the XJ. Next project on it will be the cones, but I may keep the stacks from the airbox. Donno what exactly I am going to end up with.

Darn shame I am taking an all original XJ and customizing it like this. I know each day it becomes more rare to see one.

Use a K&N filter (good for 1,000,000 miles) and put it in the OEM housing.

Personally, I think cones look awful, sound awful and often make a bike run awful(ly). They suck water in when it rains, don't filter as well as OEM, mess up jetting (just check the threads with jet problems where the word 'cone' features) and they leave a daft looking gap where the OEM setup was. Don't do it!

            So there!

Who you talkin' to James? This thread has been dead for 6 years!

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. For some reason, this thread appeared on the first page when I logged on! ie recent response from someone. Now I see that I'm talking to myself

I still think don't do it though.......even if I'm saying it 10 years later.....
