4, do you really need another reason ??

    1. yep
    2. Hmmm... if I can hear the engine at the air filter, the throttle is open too much ergo, won't pull as hard. Is it just me, or things pull better at a certain degree of open throttle. Not too much, not too little.

    4. yep... my stock setup works. Why change it?

      Results and Brand?

      Wayne,

Now that you have had them a week, how are the new filters working out for you? And which brand did of filters did you get?

      David Browne,

It really sounds like you are sold on the cones idea- which brand do you have?

Also- for both of you, where did you get them? I haven't looked too hard yet but did check out the K&N section in Dennis Kirk and couldn't find a listing for cones for the XS11.

I am not technically a Kustom Koner. I have the Foam Air Filter Kit from JCWhitney #AAE023422A $44.99 for the four. They are by Unifilter and are cylindrical with chrome ends. I don't know if K&N cones would be better. I am poor and got the cheapest, recommended privately by a lister, and no regrets.

When I got my bike it had broken carbs and exhaust and I got the individual filters so that I could pull the carbs for fiddling and maintain serenity. My bike is a sorry-looking survivor, but I've got her running well despite certain rustic repairs. I haven't had to work on her for over 14k now. The first 3k were pretty gassy though.

Rode out to central Oregon canyons with JSells, Jeff, and Jason on Sunday, they have beautiful pampered xs11s and cook right along. I have plenty of motor in that company, and carry more weight. It was great! Just loping along over hill and dale at 80 mph, no struggle, no work at all, mile after mile, I was thinking how the old CB650 would be no fun with these boys! I was thinking how we all just gas-n-go, 500, 1000, 1600 miles a pop. Canada? OK. Idaho? Sure. Custom cone…custom cone…custom cone…

Does anyone happen to know the part number for the K&N stock replacement filter? I have a group of boneheads to deal with at the parts store.

I am going to check the K$N site, but would welcome any help.

There are cones, then there are cones. Some people have found that some suppliers are sending units that do not work - see ratbyk's and oldnortonrider's posts in this thread (the end of page 5 also)

My reply to them gives info on where to get Emgo cones that do indeed work.

I, too, have those JCWhipme chrome cans, and mine breaths just fine as well.

One problem is that the stock air box provides about 20% of the support for the carbs. It's not unheard of to have carbs with individual filters pop out of their mounts on had bumps. I'd rig up a safety strap with a couple of nylon wire ties so they'll have a stop to prevent bottoming.

Also if you want it to run right, you will have to rejet it. Both main and pilot jets and maybe raise the jet needle.

I run the stock box with a K&N filter and think it is the way to go. You get the support, a place to attach the breather hose and still a little of the intake sound. And after a little practice, you can get the carbs off, change jets and back on in less than an hour.

I replaced the phillips head screws on the clamps with allen head screws and it really speeds up the R&R process.

I use a K&N filter in the stock air box. I have bored four 1" holes in the bottom of the air box to allow more air. Performance is very near that of individual carbs and looks totally stock. Carb sound is great.

Putting Allen head screws on the carb clamps make just to much sense. I wish I had thought of it.

Seriously though removing the carbs with the stock air box isn’t that hard, once you get the hang of it but if you do it wrong, they fight you all the way out.

well, I was running the partsnmore filters for the last month with all sorts of carbs troubles - always getting sooty black, even though I ended up running the default mains and pilots, also set the needle height a bit lean...still black...

not only that, but just trying to hold a steady speed was a fight, seemed like she was fighting herself the whole time.

Put the stock airbox with K&N filter back on, lo and behold she is as smooth as can be holding speed, but now I have low and midrange problems...time to plug chop to see where I need to go.
