I ran all my bikes on stock, except guzzi... had K&N there.
IMHO, if you buy K&N or other custom air filters, you should save yourself lotsa trouble getting the carbs off... besides, they're washable and they cost bout the same as original filter (K&N replicas). Don't forget to rejet the carbs..

I have Emgo (less expensive K&N lookalike). So do several others. Is that 'Custom Cone'?

            Custom Cone...Custom Cone...Custom Cone...Custom Cone...Custom Cone...Custom Cone...

This is a mantra which will never leave my brain, thank you very much.

Custom cone, anyone? My, your cone is looking very custom today. I'd love to stay, but I have to oil my custom cones. Kustom Kone--trashy parking lot but OK burgers. My name is Cone...Custom Cone.

I have been running K&N in the stock box. I just installed Individual filters this week. Ive yet to see how its going to run with them.

By custom cone, I was meaning the custom ones that I have seen on Ebay.. they look like four cones that go on the end of the carb.

                      K&N in the stock box.

I tried Emgo custom cones on a XS650 I once owned and it robbed the top end - not enuf air flo or sumthin - the 650 listers tried to tell me some crap about out of sync harmonic pulses advesely affecting my diaphragms. (Too much sangria for those guys)

How critical is it to rejet the carbs after going to individual filters.

I want to do away with that annoying box. I still have the stock exhaust.

If I do it will it just run a bit lean?

Mine ran more than 'just a bit' lean. I give a blow-by-blow description with photos of my conversion to Emgo cone filters in this thread

Running too lean can burn up valves and pistons, let your spark plug color tell you what's up.
