  • Lost in Wisconsin Rally 8-4-12

I got an early start on Wed. before the rally and left the house @ 6am headed towards Bohn Frazer's house in Shawnee, Kansas. The temps have been getting well over 100 with a planned 108 for this day, so I was trying to beat the heat. Heading north, I got to watch the sun come up.. a nice morning for a ride.

When I stopped on the border of Kansas and Oklahoma for fuel, this picture is up on their wall and I laughed. Even at an early age, boys realize that the world is our bathroom! You can draw pictures, write your name, try to hit bugs..... Sure must suck to be a girl! lol.

I hit some mid 90's temps, but then got a reprieve with some cloud cover the rest of the way in to Bohn's house.

I got to Bohn's house about 1pm, and we went to Cabellas and Bass Pro so I could get a new set of rain pants. I couldn't find mine for the trip. If you're into hunting, Cabellas in Kansas City has a trophy room of whitetail and mule deer that is really impressive. Many record deer are displayed and it's free to go look. I forgot my camera, so you'll just have to go see it for yourself!

Later we went to Russ79's house. I brought up some ribeyes on the condition that they cook them! lol. Bohn's wife made a pie to die for, which is saying a lot since pies aren't usually my favorite. It didn't even SOUND good.. apple/blackberry, but OMG it was good. I even ate the crust, which I never do. I was later told the crust was made with Crisco AND real butter. No wonder it was good! lol.

It hadn't rained in over a month at Bohn's, but it was that next morning. If you're ever at Bohn's and they offer you something to eat for breakfast, save yourself some time and just eat. Bohn pestered me for 30 minutes... then it was his wife's turn. After telling her no 39 times, she came downstairs where we were getting ready and handed me a huge bowl of freshly cut fruit. I doubt she's barely a hundred pounds soaking wet, but I got a look that promised an azz whoopin' if I didn't eat up.

We finally headed out in the drizzling rain @ 10am to head to Bob Falter's house in Iowa. It quit for a while, but looked like we were heading for more. Looked nice over here....

Not so much right in front of us...

Before too long, the rain came out and the sauna... err... rain gear had to come off. We rode through Kansas, then Missourri before seeing this sign.

We got to Bob's place and loaded up in their car to go to the Amana Colonies to eat and go to the brewery there.

Bohn in front of the place we would be eating at in a bit.

Neat place to visit if you've never been. Lots of history there with lots of shops. We stopped first to do a little wine tasting, then headed to the brewery with Bob in the lead.

There's Bob's wife Jackie, our designated driver, with the bottle of wine and ordering a beer. They also make several flavors of soda pop. Also in the pic.. Bob, at the far left, used to work at the Amana Colonies back in the late 70's, and he met a guy that knew him from then, who you can barely see.

Out in front of the brewery, they grew beer hops as decoration. I think it's a very cool idea.

Bohn, Bob, Jackie, their grandson Jarrod (Who was a bit smaller last time I saw him) headed to dinner.

More beer, and the placemats told a bit of their history...

    And a closer look...

It talks of "The Great Change" in 1932, and I thought they were talking of the Great Depression. More about it here if you care to read about it and the colonies...

    http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/amana/amana.htm

We went home after eating, had some more talks and a couple more beverages, then called it a night.

Next morning, Bob, Bohn, and I headed north to meet up with Arlan, then ride up to Wisconsin to Gary's place for dinner. This turned out to be a beautiful day and a great day to ride.

I've ridden many states that have those slick tar snakes in the cracks on their roads. I've not ridden many states where there's a possibility that the highway crews may have to mow the highway. Grass snakes are way worse than tar snakes! lol.

Bob then took us by what used to be a lake (Lake Delhi) where the dam broke. All this area used to be under water...

Several high dollar homes that used to be lakefront..

If you want to donate, a mere $1500 will get your name on the board, but for a measely 100k, you too could be in the "Circle of honor".

After some more riding, we came to a town along the Mississippi River. I saw this dam sign on this dam sports lounge....

But we didn't go out on their huge dam deck. We kept riding down that dam road, riding past a really nice dam park...

...to get a pic of some concrete water-blocking thingy in the river.

We continued on. Yup.. Bohn's still back there. Anyone know what kind of tree that is? I think they are cool looking.

Mcgregor, Iowa has a really nice main street if you just so happen to be in the middle of nowhere Iowa for some reason...

I saw this and wondered if the cook and mechanic were the same guy...

We continued on down the Mississippi towards Marquette

Along the way, I saw a couple bald eagles skimming the water. Last year we were here, one flew lazily right above our heads.

This was at the casino in Marquette. I'd never seen one before while sober.

Then on to Lansing where we were meeting up with Arlan.

We met Arlan, fueled up, and went up to the overlook for some pics of the Mighty Mississippi.

The river has gotten so low that many of the barges are getting stuck further downriver. Wen stood there and watched this one make the turn.

We were about to ride over that bridge you see in the above pics. On the other side is Wisconsin. Arlan leading us up onto the bridge... I wondered what that steel deck would be like trying to ride on in the winter and icy

Bohn coming down the other side...

Arlan and a car even older than his bike

He then took us on a road with some really nice twisties to play on a bit...

He then pulled over to show us the spot where Bob had wrecked several years back.

We sat there and listened to Bob tell how he'd come down that hill from the left of the pic and crashed in the turn, broke his pelvis, and had to be airlifted out. Then I think this is the part where Arlan said, "That’s a funny story, Bob... can you tell us again?"

OK, not really, but Bob was telling the story and Arlan did have that look on his face like "Sucks to be you!"... lol.

I mentioned it before in the rally section, but we stopped to eat lunch. As we were heading out, I looked at the GPS and it said we were 99 miles from Thorp, Wisconsin, where our hotel was. We went riding for almost 80 miles, stopped for gas, then I looked again, and it said we had 97 miles to go to Thorp! Nothing wrong with taking the long way, right? Anyway, off to go play some more...

... until we come up on this even earlier model of vehicle.

I took this pic, but not really sure of Amish beliefs... I pray I have not taken the souls of these poor people and stored them on my evil modern picture taking device. There were actually 4 people in this buggy.

It was a close race, but Bob and Bohn's 100 HP devil machines were able to just barely get by the 1HP SS Coup. He'd apparently been hitting the turbo boost quite a bit in the buggy as evidence of its waste gate was all over the highway behind them. And oh yeah.. Bob's headlight low beam is out (Along with his reserve lighting unit apparently?) lol.

      Off again...

      Arlan's sweet Midnight

We finally got to the hotel, dropped off our stuff, and went over to Gary's where many cold beverages were ready. Note to self.... When taking bike pics, do not park a bike you've been riding through the drizzly rain and road spray and park next to a guy that takes care of his bike. I forgot to tell you, Arlan. You piss me off.

A pic of one of the hummingbirds I kept scaring off while trying to get this. It finally got brave (Or hungry) enough for the shot.

Yet another case of something tasting amazing, yet not looking quite as good as it tastes.. lol. This chili and Brats that Papa Smurf made were awesome!

This is Nikki (Tulip) on the left, and this other gal was with Gary's son. Assuming his girlfriend, (Didn't catch her name) but I did tell him that she was better looking than they guy he was with when we innitially got there. Also on the table... the chili, as well as some "Fixins" and some homemade wine a friend of Gary's brought. We kept hearing stories of some amazing wine made from maple syrup, but the stingy suckers wouldn't bring it out for the likes of this bunch. Can't say as I really blame them..

Closest is Bohn, furthest is Papa Smurf, and on the left, you can barely see Dan Oseagheeuipsalijclksjfdmnzxcvnosdoiorjtfjksldcvjos idjdfijfnsoidjojoifgishhhouaewrowpotuposcmfvj (O'shay) He says his name is from old gay-lick. He said they only had like 20 letters in their alphabet way back, so just wondering why they needed them all in just one name so many times?

And here's Nate. Nobody invited him to sit at a table, so he just sat on the beer. That way, at some point, everybody would HAVE to talk to him whether they wanted to or not. Smart young man, that one, though a bit on the clumsy side, apparently. Quick learner too.. I bet he'll never sit or ride between a married couple again! lol.

The firepit.. with three bonfires ready in the background if we caught Gary not looking.

Next morning, we met for breakfast. Bob and Bohn...

        Arlan and Nikki

        Nate, James, and Gary

And those bannished to the kid's table... Papa Smurf,(Don? They told me but I'm terrible with names) Ted, and Dan.

A few of us walked back to the hotel to get our gear on and go, so we missed Nate's showing off of his dismount abilities. I heard it was a really low score and he wouldn't have medalled though. We took off with cool temps, overcast, but mostly dry roads. Ted bringing up the rear...

I think it was shortly after this pic, I looked behind us and noticed Ted was missing. I raced up to the front to let Gary know and we all stopped. Apparently, someone dropped a camera on the ground. That irritated the heck out of me that some moron couldn't even secure thier stuff while they ride. That thing could have bounced up and hurt someone, not to mention the whole frikkin group having to stop because of it.

So after I got my camera back, we continued on... and as you can see, it still worked.

Dan has done a lot of travelling to other countries and gets confused as to which side we ride on here, so he just rides in the middle to be safe.

A nice pic of my GoPro anyway...all up on my head Teletubby style. lol.

Here, we stopped at a lake.. can't remember the name.

This is like the mirror thing.. A pic of someone taking a pic of someone taking a pic of.... You get it.

We stopped for gas and Amy and her brother happened to be riding by, so they turned around and at least graced us for a minute. I got this pic as proof that we had a showing of at least three people that squat to pee... Amy, Nikki, and Nate.

We got to the highest point in Wisconsin, saw this sign, and every single person wondered how many times Greg has heard this exact same thing...

Mirror thing again... Nikki and James.

300 yds uphill to the tower for the view...

        WOULD YOU QUIT THAT ALREADY!?

Back on the road again... Nate.

          Papa Smurf

          James

          Nikki

          Bob

          Ringleader, Gary

          Ted

          Bohn

And last but not least... a head-cut-off Dan. But truly, we just want to see the bikes, not the ugly guys riding them, right? lol. I didn't get another shot of Arlan since I had already got one the day before.

I thought Gary was going to show us something good down this road, but was disappointed.

After the ride, and back at Gary's, Papa Smurf rigged up a bunch of grub in an old milk can. He called it a "Cajun Microwave". There were ears of corn, a rutabaga, a small sack of onions, cabbage, and a few sticks of sausage on top. Pour in a gallon of water and a couple cans of beer, cover it, and an hour later.. Yum.

And Gary had the prime rib cooking in the 55 gal drum smoker...

Gary needed another set of eyes to see if the meat was done, so he borrowed James'.

Great food, great friends. All too soon, it was time to go. Next morning, I decided to just ride home instead of taking an extra day. Bohn and I started off together, but I travel a bit faster than he's comfortable doing, so at the first gas stop, we said goodbye. A few hundred miles down the road, he pulled into the McDonalds I was just leaving from.. lol. Started in Wisconsin at 7:30 am and went through Minnesota

Saw this cool plane display of F5's in Thunderbird paint.

          Iowa

          Missourri

          Kansas

And finally, the one I was looking for to get home.

I'd ridden out to the rising sun, and rode home in the setting sun.

1,000 miles in 14.25 hrs. The bike ran great. Thank you for a great rally, Gary, and hope to see all of you people again soon.

Now that's what I'm used to from Tod. I think on our last trip when he said he "just didn't take many pics" it was because he was busy trying to keep up with his son David.

Great stuff man, I really wanted to be there.

BTW, what I usually hear is 'You hugged me and now I'm pregnant".

Oh.. on the videos, you can change the quality in Youtube at the bottom of the screen by clicking on the little gear looking thing. I didn't shoot in 1080 because it takes up too much room, so 720 is the best you get. lol. And re-reading.. sorry about all the typos. Any mods that feel like fixin' 'em, feel free. Kinda like the one that said the rain finally came out, when I meant the sun?

Wisconsin segment...Thorp...You were about 30 miles from my home town. Our sports teams played Thorp and I have been there many times, have relatives in the area. You went past the turn off for Stanley where my father was born, just west of Thorp. Local restaurant there used to be know as the Thorpedo. Some of the photos look like you were on old Hwy 29.

                          Nice photos and commentary.
