They are a comprehensive check of all the safety aspects of the vehicle and there are way too many people on the road who have no idea how to maintain their vehicle and simply fix things when they break. Theyre a danger on the road and simply dont care about thier own or other peoples safety.
When I started driving here is CA, they still had random inspections. The Highway patrol would setup checkpoints, and would stop vehicles at random, those stopped and who passed would get a sticker for the windshield and you were exempt from getting stopped again for a year. If you failed, you got a fixit ticket, unless it was something you could fix on the spot (like a light out and you had a spare bulb) in which case you got a pass and a sticker. Our great Gov Gerry Brown decided that the program cost too much, and cancelled it, or course in the process losing more in federal highway funds than it saved. I wish they still had that program, my vehicles are always kept in passing condition and frankly I have seen the condition of vehicles continue to decline since that time.

I see cars all the time with no taillights, and unless a cop happens to get behind them and see it, they just keep going around like that until someone rear ends them. And then they keep driving anyways unless the car won't go anymore.

And that's where I have the problem. The overwhelming majority of people keep their cars in a good condition. Now you wish that they would go back to taxing everyone including this overwhelming majority because of the actions of a few. Why don't they just crack down on the few? Why should the people that take care of their stuff be charged also?

Sounds a lot like the same thinking on our healthcare crap. Screw with the 85% that have it to benefit the other 15% instead of just making a program for that 15%.

From observation here in California, it's the overwhelming majority that don't bother. Yes they do things like brakes and such, but the number of lights I see out (headlights, tail etc) is scary. If they had the random checks again, most of these would be fixed, and they could stop doing the drunk driver checks and just do these instead (this would catch them as well as the drunk driver stops anyways).

Driving around in Sacramento gets your headlights and tail lights knocked out on a regular basis. Try Southbound 99 from 12th street about 4pm on.

They could help the coffers by just citing people for those violations but they rarely get stopped unless the LEO's want to look for something else.

The safety issue is behind the wheel. Not the car. A car that doesn't move doesn't kill people on the road. Safety inspections are a crock. There should really be such a thing as personal responsibility as a driver. I do my best to maintain my machine. People who don't care to will not be dissuaded by an inspection, they will just find a way to bypass it.
