This ride is actually two day rides and an over nighter combined into one if no one objects.May take a couple of posts to complete,I am a two finger typer and I like to smell the diesel fumes as I travel. Many great rides on here, some like to do the spirited rides(fast) I like life in the slow lane (60 or under).
Gonna combine several rides into one to make a nice(hopefully, not too good at this) ride report so that we can get some riders who might want to travel here.Yes I like OHIO.
From Dunlap OH,nw of Cincinnati, I work my way to RT52,a beautiful road that follows the Ohio River. The first place of interest is Point Pleasant,a nice little rest area and Grant's birthplace,a small house and museum is there, never open when I have been there. East bound on 52 we follow the river, not always in site but just over the hill.Next we come across the Meldahl Dam And Lock, nice big area for cooking lunch, watching the riverand barges going thru the locks, pretty cool to see,and if ya have a scanner you can listen in on the radio chatter.Used to go out a little ways on the dam and see the operations at an observation tower with a small museum and a history of the river and how locks work but since 9/11 I have not seen it open since,WHAT A SHAME!!
Oh did I mention CSX tracks were across the river in KY and they follow our route!A train buff on my end:-)
Heading east bound again we come across a ferry to Augusta Ky,never took the bike across but did do a car once.A great little town if you want to see how life was in the 1800's.Home of Nick,Rosemary and George Clooney..worth a visit.
Farther on down the road is Ripley ,nice town, home of the Rankin House, part of the undergound rr to get slaves to the free north. What a view from there,it sits way up high above the river which is in a gentle U shape .Best view of the OHIO River I have ever seen.
As we travel east we come to Aberdeen and cross the bridge to Maysville KY to see their flood walls, yes I said flood walls.I can not post websites or pictures at this time since computer crashed awhile back so do a search on Maysville Ky.
As I travel along this route I almost feel like I am going back in time, the river is always on my right side,I am in what once was Indian territory.....the history in this area...
Will finish this report tomorrow, hope you enjoyed the ride so far.
