This ride is actually two day rides and an over nighter combined into one if no one objects.May take a couple of posts to complete,I am a two finger typer and I like to smell the diesel fumes as I travel. Many great rides on here, some like to do the spirited rides(fast) I like life in the slow lane (60 or under).
Gonna combine several rides into one to make a nice(hopefully, not too good at this) ride report so that we can get some riders who might want to travel here.Yes I like OHIO.
From Dunlap OH,nw of Cincinnati, I work my way to RT52,a beautiful road that follows the Ohio River. The first place of interest is Point Pleasant,a nice little rest area and Grant's birthplace,a small house and museum is there, never open when I have been there. East bound on 52 we follow the river, not always in site but just over the hill.Next we come across the Meldahl Dam And Lock, nice big area for cooking lunch, watching the riverand barges going thru the locks, pretty cool to see,and if ya have a scanner you can listen in on the radio chatter.Used to go out a little ways on the dam and see the operations at an observation tower with a small museum and a history of the river and how locks work but since 9/11 I have not seen it open since,WHAT A SHAME!!
Oh did I mention CSX tracks were across the river in KY and they follow our route!A train buff on my end:-)
Heading east bound again we come across a ferry to Augusta Ky,never took the bike across but did do a car once.A great little town if you want to see how life was in the 1800's.Home of Nick,Rosemary and George Clooney..worth a visit.
Farther on down the road is Ripley ,nice town, home of the Rankin House, part of the undergound rr to get slaves to the free north. What a view from there,it sits way up high above the river which is in a gentle U shape .Best view of the OHIO River I have ever seen.
As we travel east we come to Aberdeen and cross the bridge to Maysville KY to see their flood walls, yes I said flood walls.I can not post websites or pictures at this time since computer crashed awhile back so do a search on Maysville Ky.
As I travel along this route I almost feel like I am going back in time, the river is always on my right side,I am in what once was Indian territory.....the history in this area...
Will finish this report tomorrow, hope you enjoyed the ride so far.

Following along RT52,I have the river on my right and hills on my left,it is just so easy to get lost in your thoughts, the road is good, traffic is pretty lite, lots of side roads to take, some covered briges just off the beaten path, bike is purring as usual, this is one of those roads that brings out the smile on my face:-)
But now we are getting into the real life again,Portsmouth OH,the reason for this ride...the flood wall murals.Do a search for flood wall murals and Portsmouth..can't get the web site posted. My bad. The wall is about 1/4 mile long with murals painted on each section telling the story of the region. Roy Rogers on his horse, trains, industry, there is one of a local mc club,if you look real close into the mirrored sunglasses you will see their club house to the right and if you turn your head you will see it in real life...just too cool of a place to see.Could go on but it is time to find a place to stay the nite and the perfect place is Shawnee State Park(do a oh state park search) just east of Portsmouth. Beautiful park with camping, cabins and a lodge that are just great.I am told that a lot of people who are planning to hike the Appalachian Trail take the trails around here for practice.
Not your ordinary ride report but!!! it is one of my favorite places to ride to. I don't know where RT 52 goes to over all but I have been on it to Bluefield WV(from Cincinnati) and will tell ya it is one heck of a ride, maybe a banjo playing in the back ground like Deliverance but something ya need to experience.
    Ride safe.

Just did close to the same ride as I posted above two weeks ago except that we took the ferry to Augusta KY,the ferry ramp and loading area was dry so we didn't worry about slipping on the deck. There was us and a p/u with a big ole boat in tow. Smooth ride across to the Clooneys home town,Nick,Rosemary and George that it. We didn't stay to look at the old shops,or just browse around in this really nice town,we wanted to ride!!
So we are on the KY side of the river on RT8 which is a cool road and is not traveled much except for the locals. We are just a few feet from the CSX rr tracks but I did not see any freight action:-(
We moved on this road taking in the sites of the OHIO river as we went...beautiful!!!Then we made it to Maysville KY where we hit their flood wall, first time my riding companion on a 750 Honda Shadow has ever been east of Cincinnati,he was just blown away by the size of the murals painted on the walls and the detail.
We had our fill and crossed the old bridge back to Ohio to Portsmouth and their flood wall murals...after about an hour and a half of looking at the walls and the park on the river side and just plain enjoying looking at the river and new bridge just built to KY we were ready to roll on to Logan OH our final destination.
We went thru Portsmouth on RT 52,heavy traffic and hot, for acouple of miles till we found our road RT139..this road followed some creeks, valleys, hillsides and some just plain fun riding on smooth as silk blacktop...excelent ride, all back country.
We eventually made our way to RT 93 which was another made for motorcycle road, some more spirited riding, just cutting thru a beautiful part of OHIO especially this time of the year, and made it to the motel in LoganOH where we met a few of the Harley riders we wanted to meet up with.Great group of people,my age, late 40 to mid 50'sbeautiful bikes gotta admit.
The next morning we did our ride as the Harely riders had a plan of their own, so we went to Hocking Hills State Park and took in all the sites there were to see, what a great day we had and we were all wore out from the hiking and some excellent riding thru the Hills, spirited on excellent roads!!!
Sunday morning we were packing our bikes( we knew there was a mc accident the day before from listening to our police scanner)
but we find out of the eleven Harley riders we came to meet three went to hospital, one hit by a car, broken shoulder,my friend was following his wife on her sporster hit some gravel and went down and he tried to avoid her but nicked her rear fender and went down, lots of road rash but they lived and were ok after a hospital visit...bikes did not fair so well, trailerd home.

It was a great ride, pictures soon to follow I hope....I have some mental issues when I try to post pics:-)
If ya made it this far just look around the next bend...what you are looking for is there!!!!!!!!!!
