  • Several questions about my Maxim 700

Starting to order parts for my big modification spree. Initially I want to know if there are any parts in racing series bikes, GSXR or R1/R6 bikes have cams that could be put in my XJ700 Maxim. If not, are there any places to order nice cams? I plan to mill, port and polish, put forged pistons in, and ceramic coat everything.

Also, wahts the Lift/Duration of these cams?

    Hop Ups

If you took that pocket full of money that you are going to spend trying to make your Maxim go faster and put it into a newer sport bike you will go faster. Have more reliability, better handling and better brakes. From what you are suggesting that you are going to do to the Maxim you will be spending in excess of $2000.00.
Use your XJ700 as a trade in along with 2 grand and move up to a fully sorted package.
You will go faster safer and longer.

        Mods.

Welcome Nufsaid You may want to heed Ken's advice. I have had a xJ 700 & a XJ 750 ,both great bikes but you will not get out what you put in ($$$$). Get a 95-99 model, insur. is not that much more and performance will be a lot better. No mods. needed. Just a thought.... bkr

Get and FJ1100. It'll go faster than any sane person will want to go...

Listen to Geezer. My wife rides an FJ1100, and theres no way you're gonna make that thing go as fast as one of those, short of a turbo, and a bottle.
High 10's in the quarter and an observered speed of 135+ mph. I was doing 130 on my XS and my wife just blew by me like my bike stopped running. Twice she did that.

I had a FJ100 up to 105 at the top of third gear. I backed off at the top of fourth, shifted into 5th to let the engine unwind. I started breaking at 140mph. It had more throttle left than I had the nerve to use (on that road anyway.)

I hate to spoil your opinion of me but that was 18 or so years ago and the bike only had less than a 1000 miles on it. The owner told me to take it out and see what it would do, so I did.

About 5 months later I did the total crash estimate on it for the insurance company. The owners brother came in to see the bike and I asked how the guy was doing after the crash. He said that he was expected to be able to walk again. This guy was 45 and I was around 27. I figured that if an older guy couldn't resist that much power, I sure as hell couldn't. The insurance ajuster offered me that bike dirt cheap and I'm glad I passed on it. Now I might have enough self controll but I sure didn't back then...

Now a days I don't ride all that fast and on group rides you'll find me keeping up the rear. I love my XS11 but I don't ring it out very often and I don't think I've had it over 90 mph.

I guess old is a state of mind... Actually I'm 48 and I took the title geezer when I recognised the looks I was getting from parts guys was the same looks that I gave middle aged guys that asked for long unavailable parts at my shop over 20 years ago. I used to think what a geezer and now I'm the geezer.

I know whay you mean we're having some warm sunny weather and riding the old Mongrel makes me feel like a kid again. I just need to stay away from the mirror...

I used to tell people that you can put and airplane engine in a submarine if you try hard enough but it's usually not worth the effort.
