  • Honda CB550 frame

OK, got a 75 CB550 "Parts lot" last week. The parts are now a near complete bike with some nice new stuff, clip ons, seat, and 4 into 4 which cost more than the whole pile, and even a title!
The frame has been cut badly to remove the seat hinge and kickstand leaving thin spots and holes( sawzall??). Are these frames anything other than mild steel? I have no problem welding the holes up but want to use the correct materials and thicknesses.

For your application, a MIG wire feed works fine. If opting to use an arc welder, 3/32" LH 70 with amperage set approx. 70-80 amps. Can also arc weld things up using Lincoln rod 6011 also 3/32" with amperage set at 90amps. This particular rod is used when components being welded are not totally clean. BTW, just some input from a certified welder and fabricator.

Thanks man. I will be using a Hobart Handler 175 most likely. I appreciate your help.

        Good Luck with your project.

CB550 is a fun bike. Owned one in California and rode it 25,000 miles.
        Mostly in the Sierra Nevada's.
It never let me down but does have 'interesting' behavior running hard in the mega twisties.

Post some pics and progress report .................

I will. Bought it in boxes. Had a green 74 CB550, and several 74 750's I sold years ago and regretted the minute they left the drive. No more, I am keeping everything forever now. My wife is not nearly as enthused about that as I am but the garage is where I have the final say...may be the only place but I am clinging to it.
