Nope, no running bike yet, but I drove a car, parked on the other side of the train tracks so as not to be associated with this bunch too much. That being said, there are just some people in this world who shouldn't try to give anyone else crap for riding bitch behind some burly dude...
Just sayin'....Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

Move over XS11's - New King of the Garage
XS11 Friends,
Well, I bit the bullet and purchased the FJR! Told the ATL dealer to kiss it where the sun doesn't shine and drove over to Montgomery Alabama to purchase this beauty.......
I opened her up a LITTLE on the way home (about 130 miles one way) and quickly hit 120mph in a FLASH!..... Holy Crap Batman this Beast is FASSSSST! I Love the; built-in cruise control, ABS, linked braking, motorized wind screen, digital gizmos, and TONS OF POWER.... Not quite the experience one gets from and XS11?
I also absolutely love my XS11's and they are in great shape (better than most, not as nice as some) but I just don't trust any of them for truly long trips. Every rattle or squeak has me biting my fingernails and hoping the ignition module, or the pick-up wires, or some other gizmo is not going to give up the ghost too far from home. Even though they look pretty darn good there are still hundreds of dollars of parts that should be replaced on ALL of them: coils, shocks are crap, seats are all decent but none of mine have beautiful OEM pans & covers, forks could use an upgrade, some of the chrome is crappy, etc.
So....In order to really enjoy my favorite hobby on LONG out-of-state rides I had to buy something that wouldn't have me biting my finger nails or sweating bullets when I felt some mild hiccup.
My; Ugly Duck, Mayberry, and Dead Duck XS11's will all be maintained and driven regularly. My son drives the café and the XJ mini-maxim to work very regularly! I will continue to drive the others.
However, the '79 project from Florida (aka Pensacola) may be dead in the water but I may pick it up again someday. I've already spent hundreds of dollars buying replacement parts for it......Unfortunately, Pensacola is likely to find her new accommodations unappealing... She's headed for the backyard in order to make more room for MONTGOMERY.
Sincerely,Kurt Boehringer

Congratulations Kurt!!! I agree completely with all the reasons you state for the need for a modern day sport tour machine. i Have done that for a number of years myself. The Old bikes were relegated to easy day rides and rallies while the LD and sporty stuff was handled by my ST1100s... But once youve grown accustomed to what the FJR1300 has to offer you'll find yourself spoiled rather quickly... Wishing you and Nancy many happy miles on you new Yamaha1980 XS650G Special-Two

Very Special
I previously joked about "keeping up with Boehringers", because it seemed that very time Kurt bought another bike that I ended up buying one shortly afterward.....but this one takes the cake.
Kurt, I know it's what you (and it seems Nancy) really wanted. You will make some great memories with this bike.
Be safe- I know you will.-Mike

Heated Grips are not so cool!

This thing is absolutely incredible! Getting spoiled "Rather Quickly" is an understatement. I was blown away within 10 minutes...
I do have one semi-funny story already.....
At pick-up the new owner (me), obviously knows very little about all the gizmos. I asked one of the techs a couple questions he basically couldn't answer anything. He showed me some of the basic information on the display screens and the basics of the menu selections. He did understand the Cruise control (or so it seemed) since it's basically just like a car.
I noticed in one of the menus the grip heaters:
"Hey, are those Grip Heaters On" I asked, "No, they are controlled by ambient temperature and they won't come on today" he replied. "Are you sure, that kinda looks like they're indicating on", "Yes, I'm sure" he replies.
About 30 miles down the road and I can not even HOLD the handle grips their burning my hands THROUGH MY LEATHER GLOVES. I'm alternating one hand for the other while trying to figure out how the HELL DO I TURN THESE OFF! I have to scroll through the menus with the left control, meanwhile driving 70mph++ up I-85 on a bike I now have only 30 miles experience with!
It took about 40 miles and me driving holding onto the brake and clutch masters until I finally figured out you have HOLD the decline switch for a couple seconds on this menu before it does anything to reduce the heat. Then that process has to be repeated a couple times to get each of the little flame arrows all gone.
I'm sure this feature will be a great benefit in the cold weather time here in Atlanta (about 2 weeks total - LOL) but it sure sucks on an 80 degree day!
Sincerely,Kurt Boehringer

Old?
Congrats on the new bike purchase. I think that the new ride is possibly better than these ole 11s.
Then again, having ridden almost a 1,000 miles down the east coast and back on my Venturer with Jeffh and 2 other XS1100s without any mishaps, I'm still pro XS1100.
So, cheers to the new and old Yamahas.1981 XS1100H Venturer
