My friend gets 13.4v at idle, but drops to 12.4v at 1/4-1/2 throttle, and battery dies within a mile of riding. Any suggestions what to fix/replace first?

Sounds like the regulator/rectifier is bad. Be sure and check all your connectors for good contact also.Greg

Awesome! I'll tell him to start with a tube of dielectric grease and just pop apart and reconnect all of the connectors. Or is there a better method?BARE BONES CHOPPERS: If it don't make it go faster, you don't need it!

That'd be a starting place. I still think that with the voltage dropping as RPMs increase is a regulator that is unable to handle the voltage increase from the alternator.
Like Brant said it was probably a poor connection that caused the regulator to fail. Give cleaning the connections a try. An emery board or even a pink eraser on a pencil works good for cleaning the spades, If you just be sure the female connectors are tight you should be good.
That last line sounded kinda sexy didn't it?Greg
