    middle drive

So i've been looking this bike over and would I be safe in saying that the middle drive is lubed from the engine oil? I can't find a filler or drain for the middle drive at all.

        Carbs etc.

Well the carb cleaning didn't go so well. Once I had them apart and through the ultra sound a couple times, it was quite evident that these carbs had been through one heck of a fire. The bodies were full of stress fractures and were distorted accounting for the hanging butterfly's.
I managed to find two partial racks while dumpster diving this morning and it looks like I may be able to scavenge a full set of working carbs from all three sets.
TC's fuse block just fits by the way.

          Tool

I have a couple questions about the use of the tool. First, is it compatible with both 650 - 1100's. Second, so from looking at the tool, one port is always open, either 1 or 4 depending on which side you insert from. Now the bend in the rod is to be able to tighten down the system so the rubber distorts/ expands to close off the other three ports?

Yes, It's compatible for all YICS engines. The tool does not close the ports, It isolates them from each other.

              drain plug carbs

              Hey Mack,
The middle drive is lubed by the engine oil and there IS a drain plug
I can't find my shop manual but do remember it exists.
I can't remember if it is a 17 mm or 19 mm and it is on the very bottom of the cases tucked up in there near the middle drive.
Also if needed I have a set of 700 maxim carbs 33mm versus the 32mm
on the 650. The jets are trash... bodies and slides/diaphragms are good
let me know if you need them.

                X2 on the drain plug.
Most don't know it's there so it never gets drained.

                  wait a minute..... What????

                  a what?? a where??

i've been through the owners manual a dozen times,
and i've been through the hanes and factory service manuals countless times..
                  and i've never spotted that.

(i'll have a look, and see if i can spot it now..)

Ok, i'll bite... why would they do that?

I'm sure there is a reason, i have yet to find something on these machines that
isn't well designed. (just a few items that time&moisture hasn't been kind too)

considering these are 30+ years old, they do hold up well.

Oh! Yes two drain plugs. Middle drive plug is to be torqued to 11.6 ft/lb just like the oil filter. Engine plug to 31 ft/lb

It is recommend that you don't remove the second drain plug, it strips out very easily. once you get the engine running, get it warm put some seafom in the crank case, run for five to ten min (on center stand and shift through the gears) and drain. I have done this procedure to two XJ750s and when I split the case there was not any sludge build up in the engine.

                        Middle drive

Thats good to know, I haven't spent much time yet looking for the culprit but if it has a drain plug it must have a separate well. Trying to figure out the oil routing, if it's a shower or bath and pick up system for the middle drive. I like your idea of one drain after seafoam though. Not only easier but by all indications this bike has been in close proximity to a major fire. I scoped down the cam chain tunnel and saw lots of sludge stuck to the sides. The seafoam should help.

I realize that you guys probably don't want to spend the money, but there is a better and easier solution than making one from those instructions. Just buy one of my YICS Eliminators and be done with it... It's certainly better priced than the tool on the XJ forum.

I tried to make a YICS tool. followed the instructions but I could not find any high temp rubber tubing to use. Use the highest rating that I could find and it still melted in the YICS tube.

I bought the eliminator off ebay (it may have been from Yahman) an it worked.

And no he is not paying me for this endorsement.

I bought a YICS eliminator tool from Larry and it was excellent!...Quality of materials and workmanship are first rate...i installed the YICS eliminator tool permanantly on my XJ1100. Once the carbs were re-synched the bike just purred at idle and throttle response was noticably more crisp! So t is worth the money and i would highly recommend it...

If there is a separate drain for the middle drive then that would mean the engine oil is not involved in the middle drive and thus it must have its own well and drive oil...
