Any one familiar with BMW bikes?

Hey Fellas

Got a guy interested in my R1 and this is his offering
2003 BMW R1100s Boxer Cup Replika Limited Numbered 180 of 200

Now none of that means a damn thing to me. I just know its cool looking and worth more than my R1. Guy says its too under powered for him and he's not a fan of the sound of the boxer engine.

I've been looking at Beemer tourers but don't know much about them.I do know one thing,by talking to owners,the boxer engine is bulletproof.I know people that have over 200,000 mi. on them and they still run like new. I don't think there super fast though.

Well I'm gonna go look @ this thing tomorrow and then stop and look @ the v star. We'll see what happens. Only thing I know about bmw's is they can be subject to gear box issues.

Years and wisdom tell me that if someone want's to trade DOWN from a Beamer to a Yamaha (status wise) there is a problem.

My thoughts Exactly Greg... But if I don't go look @ it about a month from now I will think... I should have looked @ it. My thought is if he's having such a problem moving this "RARE" bike, I'm sure I'll be sitting on it too... this is why my mind is wandering towards the V-Star. V-Star guy is 37, newly divorced, and looking for action. He needs a R1

They're a bit tame but seem to run forever. I personally wouldn't want one as they are a totally different bike from anything Japanese. In the UK, they have a reputation for being an old man's bike. Despite all BMW's hype.. you know, Vorsprung durch Technik, and the snob value, I don't think they're much good because they're so boring compared to a Japanese 4 cylinder. The Boxer engine is ancient, although tweaked over the years in many ways. The sound of them is boring too IMO.

Yes, they go for years and years and make good tourers but, as an every day use bike, and for excitement, they're poor.

All only my opinion of course.....

Personally, I would regard it the other way round..... really. Like their cars, I think BMW push the name and the badge and the snob value. Most of it is just marketing. Both cars and bikes depreciate here in the UK at an alarming rate. There's no way I'd swap my XJR1300 for any BMW... now that would be a trade down

judging by the bike's paint job, 2003 was the year BMW's graphics designer came out of the closet?
Good quality bikes. Know that all BMW spares are hand crafted by gnomes in the Black Forest out of billet platinum. Or at least are priced like they were.

I'm not very familiar with the oil head boxers but the airhead boxers are like nothing else to ride. Not very fast, not very powerful but have a visceral quality to them that can't be match, IMHO. I have heard that the oil heads are the same but with more power and speed. That being said, you either like those quirky motors or you don't. Go to a bmw dealer and take a R bike out and see if its for you.

This my bike. It pulls like a tractor and will go all day at 90mph without skipping a beat or vibrating your hands sleep. I bought this 7 years ago after not being able to shake the feeling I got after test riding one back in 1989.
