Picked up this GL500 yesterday. PO bought ten years ago and claims to have put 100 miles on it. Not a year, total, 100 miles! He said he hung up his spurs in 2007 and he drained carbs before he put it in the barn. I don't know a thing about them. Anyone know anything in particular about these? So far got the new battery, fresh fuel with full can of berrymans. She starts with choke on and revs fine but take off choke she dies out. Everything in time...berrymans needs to work. Any suggestions or thoughts on this bike are appreciated. These things any good?

I never owned one but they are supposed to be really good running machines...and they are as durable as our XS/XJ1100s'... all the usuual things to do ...start with the carbs and give them a good cleaning. You might want to search for a specific forum for this bike...if one exists? Kinda like Honda's version of a MotoGuzzi...A cool ride indeed...Last edited by madmax-im; 03-31-2012, 03:37 PM.1980 XS650G Special-Two

Looks like the same engine as my old 79 CX500. The engine torques to the right when you get on it so you have to lean left.
Top speed is about 90 downhill with the wind, 70-75 otherwise. Possibly less with the fairing.
Not a real powerhouse but pretty dependable. The carbs are a bitch to work on in between the cylinders under the tank.Greg

There's even a ball hitch on this, can't believe someone actually towed a little trailer with it.
