  • 82 SilverWing now in the stable

Picked up this GL500 yesterday. PO bought ten years ago and claims to have put 100 miles on it. Not a year, total, 100 miles! He said he hung up his spurs in 2007 and he drained carbs before he put it in the barn. I don't know a thing about them. Anyone know anything in particular about these? So far got the new battery, fresh fuel with full can of berrymans. She starts with choke on and revs fine but take off choke she dies out. Everything in time...berrymans needs to work. Any suggestions or thoughts on this bike are appreciated. These things any good?

I never owned one but they are supposed to be really good running machines...and they are as durable as our XS/XJ1100s'... all the usuual things to do ...start with the carbs and give them a good cleaning. You might want to search for a specific forum for this bike...if one exists? Kinda like Honda's version of a MotoGuzzi...A cool ride indeed...

Looks like the same engine as my old 79 CX500. The engine torques to the right when you get on it so you have to lean left.

Top speed is about 90 downhill with the wind, 70-75 otherwise. Possibly less with the fairing.

Not a real powerhouse but pretty dependable. The carbs are a bitch to work on in between the cylinders under the tank.

I'm hoping to slip by with some Berrymans in the tank rather than a full dip down but will if I need to. I have noted there are not many sites for these bikes, have to research some more

Wow! Only 70-75, the "interstate" speed limit must have been 55 when they built this! There's even a ball hitch on this, can't believe someone actually towed a little trailer with it. Thanks for the thoughts!

That it was! J.Carter era 1976. Made for some easy touring miles on my Venturer. That 'pie in the sky' was corrected March 97. Used to see several of those 'baby' wings two-up pulling trailers. The bit later 650 was the better motor and the upper valve train oiling issue was resolved on it. Don't remember exactly the details of that issue, or if it was similar to the oiling issue(or lack of) that the V-65 Magna and 65Sabre had. Those two, once a bullitin came out, could be dealer resolved with a drill and bit.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

                    NeJeff,
Go to www.randakks.com under carbs for rebuild kits. Lots of orings etc to go bad in there. Typical Honda.
