  • GL1100 stutters @ 5500 rpm

    Hey Fella's,

I'm working on my buddies 1980 GL1100. it runs great... EXCEPT! when it gets to 5500 it stutters like its running out of gas... It reminds me of the rev limiter of a modern sport bike. it doesn't matter if you roll into it or stab it it starts stuttering @ 5500. it revs fine in neutral but when you ride it it will do this every time in every gear...

Weak fuel pump? bad coils? I have no experience with these models so if anyone else does help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Don

Would have to know if YOU know whether carbs are REAL clean internally first. If your sure it's a fuel system issue and not a secondary ignition issue. Alot of options without knowing what has or has not been done. If a fuel issue, not having super clean emulsion tubes may be PART of the cause......only guessing as there is a number of things that could be the cause under load.

have not checked out timing system... I've inlisted the help of my friend SeaFoam into the carbs cuz that was my first thought. so now if I can get some weather to run it (or my a$$ off my XS long enough to ride his bike )
purrs like a kitten @ 5k down the highway... I'll give the seafoam some time and miles to work and look over the ignition and go from there. Now I know why its in my garage and not his

Checked timing today. Its fine. took fuel filter off and had no fuel in it. put hose in a can opened petcock. no fuel flow. blew a little compressed air into line TAH-DAH we got fuel flow. Took upper 'fake tank' off and took fuel sending unit out. Pumped tank out. The bottom has some floaters and the pick-up screen is pretty caked. Cleaned as best as I could and put back together. Runs better but still seems to fumble on me every now and then.

Called my friend and told him he gets to figure out how to get the tank out of the middle of the frame rails to have it cleaned. I'm not doing it. If he had bought a real bike the tank would be above the frame and easily removed

That doesn't sound good. The tank on my Honda ST11 in under seat between frame rails and I can remove it quicker than an XS11 tank can be removed, startin' with a twist of the ign. key to unlock and lift seat off.

not so easy on a Goldwing. The sump kicks out into the cross section of the frame. I think the battery box has to come out and then it pushes out the side of the frame. I really don't know. This is the point where I tell my friend... "I tried... Get yourself a repair manual and learn how to work on it!"

This is what happens when friends let friends buy Honda's!
