  • Abuncha Symptoms, whats wrong with my bike?

Pretty sure these problems are all related to one thing!
    Honda 82 Sabre V-4 Motor

    1)the delayed throttle response,
2)rpms dropping back down very slowly
3)starting to rev very high at idle, just suddenly without me touching anything. sometimes so damn high i gotta hit the kill switch!!!!!! How can it get that dang high all asudden from a low idle without me doing anything and I'm standing 5 feet away?
4)Then sometimes just turning off without warning, like it doesnt even slow down first, it just turns off!
    5) big bang coming out of exhause sometimes when i try to start it
    6) Runs alot better with the choke on!!!
    7) Bike overheats very quickly to the point of radiator fluid boiling over
fan comes on alot even in cold weather
    8) popping alot when i blip the throttle
    9) no power

    Things Ive done,
    carbs clean and synced
    compression test was good
    coils are good
plugs are coming out light tan
removing inline fuel filter changed nothing
    she idles perfect
checked for vacuum leaks, found none!
jets and everything in bike is back to stock settings
throttle cables and springs have all been checked and are working fine
    gravity fed petcocks working fine
    added fresh fuel

this is all i can think of right now any ideas?

On most bikes this is usually a symptom of being lean. this will cause the hanging idle and will also cause the idle to go up as it warms up, and lean means HOT so it will run hot as well. The running better with the choke also points in the same direction.

im with cy, sounds like ur running lean
if u havent got a vac leak, id check ur float levels,
a lean float level will run an engine hotter than a lean
      jet.
dont know about the model but if the ignition timing
is adjustable id check that also.

I believe the Sabre's are water cooled. I believe they are a 65 deg v4 engine as well IIRC (of course I could be wrong there (about the 65 deg and v4 part, I'm more sure about the water cooled part)).

Ya its water cooled and its a v45 750 Sabre. Im thinking im gonna throw in some bigger jets. Blowing a main head gasket i would feel the air pushing out if i put my hand up close to the cylinder head wouldnt I? Everyone told me to not worry about the ignition timing. It is fixed electronically with the pulse generator as a reference. Spark advance timing is very unlikely as a cause I've been told. You can check it tho and I tried and the left side generator cover must be removed when attempting to check timing(with timing light)and oil is flying everywhere? How do I go about checking the timing without that happening?

it is possible if you blow a head gasket to be an internal leak only and you could be pressuring up your cooling system with your compression or you could be burning it or the worst possible thing is that it could get in your oil and ruin your engine.

Looks like 82 Sabre V-4 uses constant velocity carbs like the XS11... Sure sounds like bad diaphrams... giving it air but slide not sliding. Just guessing.

not likely, run the bike upto operating temp,
cpl of different ways to check,
is there an xsive amount of water blowing out of the exhaust?
remove the spark plugs while the engine is hot, crank the engine
over, any water coming out of the spark plug holes?
while the plugs are out stick a light into the plug hole
is any of the pistons shiney or clean looking compared to the others?

You missed a vacuum leak... check and re-check the carb boots a few times.
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

UPDATE: Noticed Anti-Freeze drizzling very slowly out of the side of the cylinder when the bikes running. SO THE HEAD GASKET IS NO GOOD THATS FOR SURE!!! I will fix that and then get back to you guys and tell you if it made a difference!!!!! HOPE EVERYONES HAVING A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON

If you haven't already done so, I'd be checking my thermostat. The water you see coming out of the cylinder may be an effect of the problem, not the cause. You say everything else looks good, even the plug color and I'd think if anti-freeze was getting into the combustion chamber you would see a change in plug condition.

What drives the water pump could a gear or key be sheared? Was it full of water no antifreeze and froze?
