Hey folks, what causes a bike to die when it is put gear with the clutch still engaged? I succumb to the experts!

Sounds normal to me, ANY manual-transmission vehicle will do that.

Ditto to what Randy said. Sounds to like like exactly what any manual transmission should do.

If perhaps you meant when the clutch lever is pulled in, then you may need to adjust or replace your clutch cable. If you truly intended that the clutch lever is NOT pulled in and your putting the bike in gear, unless you have the engine revved up pretty hard, it is going to die. If you do revv the engine up on an 11 and slam it into gear, hold on tight!! You is going for a ride!! If your also holding the brakes on tight, then anybodies guess if it will die or burn the clutch or brakes up. My suggestion is, Do not do that!

Not sure on the year of yours but newer bikes have a saftey switch in the kickstand that if it's down will kill the motor when put into gear.

                Hi tmon,
when most folks say "clutch engaged" they mean it ain't pulled in, that the engine & tranny are connected. That's why I'm so late in realizing that you are putting the tranny in gear with the sidestand down on a bike that has a sidestand safety interlock. What bike BTW?
