83 650 worth?

Hey all, forgive me for not posting this in the classifieds, not sure if thats where it needs to be.

Member Mfarrington has a 1983 XS650. It's in real nice shape. Paint is burnt orange metal flake and everything shiny still shines. Ive been through it and it looks to be in the best shape it could be for its age. Tach would be the only real kicker, it sits SIDEWAYS, and the pin is pulled out from the center. Wierd. BUT anyway, we were both wondering what he should ask for it when he throws the big FS sign on it this week.

Is something in that good shape liable to pull in a grand even?

Don't sweat the tach

Hi Hammer,
start at $2K, you can always drop the price but you can't very well up it, right?
The tach still work even if it does look strange? Don't let a potential buyer haggle you down too much over the weird tach, it's not hard to get another tach off E-bay or so.

An XS650 that runs clean and is in good shape is worth around $1500 on average. It would be hard to push it up over $1700 unless you found somebody who particularly wants one. I've never paid more than $700. The last complete, running, titled one I picked up was for $350.

As the owner of two of these 650's, I can say they're all over the place. From FREE to 2500+ for some early bikes or REALLY nice late models. Now, some customs go for way more...
I'll be putting my '83 up for sale soon if I get the XS1100 (see my intro thread for pics) and I'm hoping to get near two grand, BUT...it needs NOTHING. I have a HUGE pile of receipts from MikesXS and 650Central, plus my time and ebay purchases.
I know we don't do this for profit and I may not get anywhere near my asking price, but you couldn't build the bike for that much.

XS650's seem to bring about the same money as XS Elevens. Early XS650s bring a lot more. An '83 should bring $1K to $2K is it's a good one. I paid $1800 for mine, new!

That appears to be an '84 model available only in Canada. I recently acquired a set of those cast wheels for my '83.

I picked up an '81 a few weeks ago for free! It has 5K on the clock. It needs cosmetics and the usual stuff after 15 years in a basement. My daughter and I are going through it for her. I expect to have $1.5 to $2K in it when it's done and looking glorious!

Another Canadian Heritage Special.

Hi Marty,
I bought one of those NOS zero miles in 1986 from the Winnipeg Yamaha dealer. It has gold pinstriping on the black tank with the inside of the pinstripe panels done in a very deep burgundy. It must be a stock paint job but I've never seen another one like it.

You folks in Canada got the last ones. I've never seen one like yours up close and personal. They were probably made from remaining parts inventory as were the '83 and '84 XJ1100's.

I have a '83 650 that I purchased from my local dealer in the fall of that year.

I never knew they were still around in 84, thought 83 was the last year for the 650 twin. It was sold to me as an 83, I never looked at the headstock.

That makes it officially the newest bike I have ever owned...

'83 or '84?

The '82 & '83 XS650 have "bajillion" spoke wheels. The '84 has cast wheels like the '81 and all the "Heritage Special" goodies.
