  • 1985 Venture Royale

Just bought a super clean Venture 23K original miles. No rust stored inside since new. $200. Took it straight to the shop to have 2nd gear fixed. Nice set for the garage 1980 XS11 next to the New (to me) Venture.

Good lord. I've been looking, least expensive I've seen was $2,000.00, most in the $2,500 - $3,500 range. $200.00 is a steal!

        Hi Bob,

$2000?......Only if you are paying your mechanic $500 per hour!

Read the tech tips on here; it is an easy home job, no big parts needed, just a few hours and some gaskets, and a bit of knowledge about shimming the 'box.

Many members on here have done this- some as a first mechanicing job.

There are fantastic photo guides to the job, and all the advice and talk-throughs you could need.

At least print 'em off and let your tech read 'em... the engine does NOT need stripped..... it does not even need to come out of the frame.

        Best of luck.

AlanB...the repair here is on a Venture, not an XS. While the problem is similar it is a harder repair job on a Venture. Yamaha fixed the Venture gears beginning in '86 when they went to the 1300cc engine. Same fix as the XS, ingcrease gear engagement by tapering the gear dogs a couple degrees. Problem was generic to all Yamahas of the late '70s and early '80s.

Understandable; the '81H was known as the Venturer, and when Yamaha came out with the Venture it caused a lot of confusion! Both were full-dress 4-cylinder bikes, after all....

That extra "r" on the end makes a lot of difference.

I've been looking for a Venture to be a companion bike to the XJ. If anyone finds another $200.00 deal they are going to pass on please let me know!

Actually the gear fix was part way through 1985. Somewhere I have the serial # after which they were fixed but I do not have it handy right now. Also it is not really very difficult to do.
It is much the same as the XS after you get the plastic off.

Just for the record, we called ourselves Venturers because we rode Ventures and and we ventured into the world, exploring the countryside. That made us Venturers.

It had nothing to do with the XS1100 Venturer, which we didn't even know about when the name was adopted. We found out about the XS1100 Venturer at a later date.

HI! BobE, how have you been!

It is a great website. I was not picking on the name, just pointing it out so no one thought I mis-typed.

You coming to the XS East Rally in Stroudsburg?

                          Hey Marty!

Long time no see! I thought you might have been the Marty I was thinking of, but wasn't sure. I didn't think you were "picking" on the name, just wanted to clarify for the folks before anything negative started.

I would love to go to the Rally, but I haven't got my XS yet, and I'm tied up till mid-June anyway. Been through the Water Gap Byway (209) many times, one of my favorite routes. Have stayed in Stroudsburg a couple of times on these rides.

                          Talk atcha later!

I just had a quick question... Is it possible to remove the rear cylinder head without dropping the motor out of the frame??

Not really even close...the XS as we all know is an inline 4 cyl engine...and Venture Royale engine is a V4 based off the VMax engine...
