If I remember correctly you can get the valve cover off with great difficulty but I do not think the head will come out without dropping the engine.
I may be wrong but you can find out from the venture site posted earlier.

I picked up my84 for $350, but it is taking much more work than I thought. Parts are harder to find than the XS, since many more people want them.
Also, the VMax was based off the Venture, not the other way around. First Venture was in 83, first Max in 85.
The only thing interchangeable between my XS and my Venture I have found is the final drive, but the ratio is not the same. I think it is even lower geared than the XS, so it would be the opposite of the 750 final drive. Not even the plugs are the same. Well, the turn signals use 1156 bulbs, but that really doesn't count does it?
The cylinder head... that would be a great question to ask at Venturerider.org. some of those guys can recite part numbers from memory, I swear. Judging from looking at my bike, I would drop the engine. Trying to get the cams and chain handled with 5" of clearance would be a pure PITA.
