Hey Midnight,
The starter clutch isn't part of the starter motor like in a car, it's a separate mechanism down inside the engine case. There are 3 pinch rollers that slide into position and grab the starter shaft and spin the engine. Once the engine is running, those rollers are supposed to retract back and allow that shaft to spin, but apparently what switz1 has said is that his starter keeps spinning once the engine gets going. After reviewing the parts fiche, I could see that there are 2 idler gears that mate with the starter gear.
Switz, you may want to check to make sure the starter solenoid is not staying energized. Also, pull the starter motor, and then turn the crank by hand and see if those idler gears are still spinning vs. being able to spin/hold still??
But like you said, IF it's locked around the starter shaft, then you'll probably have to split the cases to repair it!? Good Luck!
