Letting Go is hard to do!!!!

In the 70's as a teenager talented ridding wheelies in front of the girls next door shifting from 2 to 3 on my dirt bike I had the thottle cable lock wide open. Being talented as I was I just let it go landing in the gravel driveway. Slidding in a bent knee position I didn't fall. Feeling like a god raising to my feet seeing them standing and yelling I held my arms high into the air in victory.

The Girls seeing that my friend had went down the road falling over on a footpeg spinning arround bouncing up doing a perfect wheelie then leveling on the road like a homed in missile my buddy was comming back for me. They yelled they screamed they ran to greet me.

Me doing my victory dance knew nothing till EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Whap the headlight hit me in the thigh knocking me up in the air tumbling down victory lane.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

This one only happened last month.

I was repainting my girlfriend's Honda 450 Rebel, we had done an awesome rust stripe up the center of the tank, and black on the sides, and I had the tank sitting on a 5-gallon bucket while I was wetsanding before the final coat. That was how I did all the coats, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, right? Wrong!

I had both hands on it the whole time, keeping it centered on the bucket, then I lean over it to sand a small area on the far side under the tank, and end up pushing the damn thing off the bucket toward myself right onto the concrete! I put a softball sized dent right in the side, chipping the paint off all the way down to the metal!

If you think it's bad screwing up your own bike, try screwing up someone else's! Luckily she loves me, and didn't kill me, but I've got a lot of work ahead of me trying to get it fixed.

                My turn

                Hi,
I'm new here, and what better way to start things off than with how dumb I can be?
                Did this today:
riding int the rain, which my bike does not like, bike died twice at stop lights and just made it to a parking space before died for the third time. Sounded to me like it might be misfiring, so I put my hand over the pipes to see that all was firing. Don't have a clue why, but on the last pipe, instead of just holding my hand over the pipe, I grabbed it with my left hand. Have a blister roughly the size of a VW rabbit (classic) on the joint between thumb and forefinger. On the plus side, the rain stopped and the bike made it back to work fine, so I guess that's all that matters

There you go! Welcome to the forum!

Sputtering in the rain could be a few things. If it's electrical you can check

Spark plugs and secondary ignition connections

Ballast resistor and primary ignition connections

Wiring harness that runs along the left side of the engine next to the shift lever. That harness has the wires from the pickup coils and if water gets through a crack in the plastic covering the wires it can short the crimp connectors for the pickup coil wires until the water dries out.

Thanks! I will look into those. If I can't figure it out, I'll post in the proper forum with questions. And probably a half dozen more or so.

                      Also

There is a neutral switch on the left side bottom in the same bundle as your pickup wires. This usually gets dirty fast and when it gets wet it conducts very good and will effect the ignition when you put it in gear I discovered this when I go to the pressure car wash. Bike runs great when wet until I put it in gear and it then stops.

                        My Turn

I was balancing the carbs last Sat and had the tank off, turned around, and hooked up. I have large hands so hooking up the hoses to the carbs is not much fun. I get a brainstorm, I'll unhook the lines at the tank, get it in place, lift the back and easily reattach the hoses. I turn the tank around, run the hoses across under the carbs, and turn on the petcocks to check for leaks. My next semi-intelligent thought is, "why do I smell gas?" Cause it's running out of the hoses I didn't hook up you moron. Now have a puddle collecting on the garage floor and dripping off the engine. Now I gotta throw down floor dry, sweep that up, and answer the wife's questions as to what happened and why can't we go riding right now.
