  • Spring Solvang Rally

Say lads, check out the article on the Solvang Motorcycle Museum that I sent to Jerry to post, which he did (Thanks Jerry!) Look for it about a dozen post down. Thread starter Jerry, Thread "Solvang Motorcycle Museum."
DiverRay and I think it would be a great meeting place for a spring rally. It is somewhere southish of Santa Barbara, with lots of touristy shops and chocolate factories to keep our better halves entertained while we technophiles drool over the esoteric engineering features of Vincent's, Brough's, and Britten's.
Not to suggest that there aren't women riders who wouldn't dig seeing the museum. I truly love seeing women riders. Something about long braided hair and tight black leather, and bulges that are sort of the opposite of DiverRay's...
Anyway, read it for the enjoyment of the article, then consider it as a possible rallying point for a meet in the Spring. Think of it: unique vintage bikes, chocolate, wine, exploring new territory, new country roads, camaraderie... huh? Huh? I'm thinking late April, May?
Even a half dozen riders or couples would be great! The lady at "The Friction Zone," that I talked to said that if we ( I introduced myself as a "Vice President" of the XS11 Owners Association,) were to post a notice in their free "Events Calendar" we would probably get more interest than we wanted. Is this a bad thing?

On the personal front, I'm about to become very busy. I'm taking 6 hrs. of classes at our excellent local Cabrillo Community College, while trying to make a living as a wood floor contractor. I may try out for a part in the college production of "Inherit the Wind." This is the dramatization of the Scopes "Monkey Trail" regarding the teaching of evolution in the state of Tennessee back in the '20's. I've averaged about 1 play a year over the past 18 years,. but I've never played a judge. I thought it might be cool to be a Darwin (that's my honest sir name,) playing the part of the judge in "Inherit the Wind."
Anyway, the next installment of the "Tahoe Rally" might have to be abbreviated: I'm going to be very Busy.

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

This is a great idea, I'd love to make this ride. There are a lot of really rare bikes there to which I've got an emotional attachment, the Ariel 1000cc Square Four,

the Britten, the fabled supercharged Vincent Black Lightning and a personal favorite, a pristine example of a Matchless G12CS 650cc Scrambler, a model I once proudly owned, bobbed and rode daily.

    Mine was far from pristine!

Thanks for the great pics and the link!
Is that you? I looked a bit like that in the '70's. Hope to meet you down there!

Talk about synchronicity, just got an email from my friend "Frisco" Mike Ford who currently lives in LA. He included pics of his just completed ride from LA to Solvang Museum.

            Calling SWMBO...

            En route...

Apparently both his Guzzis are down for repair.

            So Cal backroad...

I learned to ride on these roads way back when...

May works better for me. April in Colorado is still chancy for riding othe than on an occasional basis, coul leave in sunshine and return in a blizzard.

I'm impressed that you'd consider riding from CO Jerry. May is good for me, less chance of spring rains but a rainsuit is probably a good item to have just in case.

                      Spring Solvang Rally

May will probably bve best for me too. I'll know more about my aka, acha, aca... school schedule after tomorrow. Of course Memorial day is the last of May, 3 day weekend and all, but that will be a chance for my quick-sketch artist wife to make some good money. Plus we have a Civil War reinactment in our town on Memorial day and I like to volunteer for the Confederate cause... gives me a chance to shoot at Yankee's without worrying about actually hitting one.
Glad to see this ride getting some attention. Write on!

So, is there a date set yet? I work weekends so I have to put-in for weekends early. Guess I'm hard to replace (no one else wants to be the scapegoat).
Personally I really hope to avoid Memorial Day weekend. I hate travelling on holidays.
Wife may want to come too. Bad part is she's not into looking at old bikes or shopping.

(Hmmm...Fresno is 210 miles from Solvang. There and back make up a good day's ride, plus stops for meals and the museum tour. Yosemite is just north of Fresno, and the Gold Country is a good Sunday ride. Hmmm...I wonder if I should jump in here....)
