California Gov had a motorcycle mishap this morning; LAPD found he had no motorcycle endorsement on his driver's license. However, the Police said he didn't need it since he had a sidecar attached to the bike. Is this true; you don't need a cycle license if you run a sidecar in California?

That was the LAPD!! What do they now about the California laws, except the ones they already ignore. You DO need a motorcycle endorsment for a sidecar.

Don't know about Cal., but in Illinios you don't need one for a trike, don't know about a sidecar though.

.. i've had freinds make trikes out of VWs and register them as cars so they didnt have to wear a helmet back before they lifted the helmet laws.. but i think if it is titled originaly as a motorcycle thats what its registered as always

I didn't have a motorcycle endorsement for the first couple of decades I was riding. Hell, I was taking road trips 3 years before it was legal for me to drive.

Licensing is a tax, nothing more. It neither certifies that I know what I'm doing or prevents others that don't know what they're doing from trying to run my ass over.

Somewhere in my 30's I decided I ought to get legal...just in case they ever noticed when they checked my license (nobody had yet)...so I showed up at the DMV to renew the regular license one day...said (indignently), "HEY! Where's my MC endorcement?"

The clerk said..."Hmm. They must have dropped it accidently on your last renewal. Let's just add it here...."

I don't see how they can get out of giving him a ticket. If the fact that they weren't there to witness the accident is the only reason they're citing as to why they didn't give him a ticket, how can they ticket any other accident that they don't witness???

I think the cop just didn't want his name on the ticket that the governor gets. Pass the buck so to speak.

Firstly in California you can drive a sidecar outfit with a car licence.
(State Legislation trumps Police opinion)
Secondly nobody's slagging the lady who backed out of her driveway in front of a large gentleman on a sidecar outfit.
Nobody even gave the blind-eyed cow a ticket.

Ladies backing out of driveways are a normal hazard of riding, like potholes in the pavement Fred. You are right that she should have been ticketed but then the cop would have had to ticket Governor Gropengrabber...I never heard of any exemption for sidecars, I think that was some sort of "creative" solution, so far no one has looked up the law on this. Check the facts

Hi Mike,
because you ain't heard of it don't mean it ain't so.
Considerable chatter on the SCT site regarding Arnie's little incident and the alleged lack of a proper licence.
No less a sidecar Guru than Hal Kendall has assured the SCT list that California allows sidecar rigs, trikes etc to be driven by those only having a car licence and it's been that way since 1981.
