    Exhaust type

Quick question, does anyone know please if the XS1100 1978 model originall had 2 exhausts on either side rather than all 4 on the right?

The project bike I've got has all 4 on the right but the down pipes are so low they'd get smashed to bits on the big speed bumps where I live, so wondered if it should have 2 exhausts on either side connected in the middle as I've seen? The exhaust on it isn't great but reluctant to buy something new that's all 4 on one side in case its just as low.

    Any advice or opinion appreciated.

Hello, All XS1100 & the XJ1100 came from the manufacturer with 4 into 2 exhaust systems, four downpipes, a balance crossover pipe then a single muffler on each side.

    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

It sounds like you have a Mac aftermarket exhaust. All XS11 bikes came with four into two exhaust systems. Four into two joined under and towards the front of the engine. There is a crossover in the middle.

Jardine and Mac made 4 into 2 systems, but no more. Only four into one is available now and maybe only one manufacturer. Mac is no longer in business, AFAIK.

Sounds like you have a 4 into 1 setup. A pic would help us sort out your exhaust properly. Stock systems, in good shape, are rare but can be had.
