    Oil cooler

Good Afternoon from a cold, blustery but sunny England.

Has anyone had any joy in fitting an oil cooler to an early 1100. I have picked up the oil filter adapter plate, just keeping my eyes out for a cooler. I am also thinking about fitting a cooler from another model. The mounting brackets I can fabricate fairly easily, the hoses I can get made locally. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

LoftCol, I believe you may have another issue with converting. The plate is sometimes worthless without the extended mount bolt depending on the adapter. I see these things for sale all the time without the extension bolt. Your stock bolt possibly won't reach because of the added thickness.

Footnote: In your climate, the XS11 does not really need an oil cooler. The motor might not reach temperature enough to burn off condensation. It would need at least a thermostat mounted in-line. Then you would be surprised how the oil cooler would never even get warm due to the engine never reaching a high enough temperature to open the thermostat. I have run into this myself with a KZ1000. I ended taking the thing off. You may need it in Arizona with Larry.

Yep, I run both my elevens down here in hot S. Florida for 20 years with no oil coolers and haven't had any problems. I believe they came from the factory with oil coolers everywhere but N. America.

Ditto. I too have 100,000 miles of running in the Deep South without an oil cooler. Still going!

Thanks for the replies, I picked up the filter housing, adapter plate and the extension bolt for about £5. It was a too good of a bargain to walk away from

I will bow to the superior knowledge from those of you that live in the warmer climates, if you have found no need, then I definitely will not.

            Thanks again

Running mine here in Vancouver, which would be a similar climate to you it seems to be fine... I would love a temperature gauge though.

Even WITH an oil cooler I'd be dealing wit' other factors that would make riding in the summer heat a non-starter. (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞

When I first purchased my new to me 1980 LG I bought that Lockhart cooler and ran it for a few years. I actually still have it. I remember something about two bolts and mounting spots at the top of the cooler line up with two mounting spots on the front of the frame that are already threaded to accept said bolts. At least they are there on all three of my MNS's. I spent 2 years in England while in the USAF and I remember the summers were not really too hot so I would have to say an oil cooler would be overkill.

The Special I ride now has an oil cooler on it. Unlike years past, I no longer ride when it gets too cold so I'm just leaving the cooler on. I DO live in the high desert in the Boise area, so that is a factor. I did have an oil cooler AND a gauge on my first XS, the '78 dresser. Riding through the Central Valley of California I could see the oil temp go up quickly. Cooler kept the temps at about 275 to 320F, and that worked for me. I do agree that the UK only gets hot a few days per years, so a cooler is not really needed UNLESS you spend a lot of time in slow traffic. But then, I've been to the UK in November for a week, and just a few days in the spring and summer.
