  • New to this board, checking in to say hey!!

    Hello all,
After lurking around here for a week Ive decided to join up and say hi.
I just recently aquired a 78 xs1100 from a guy i work with. He was the original owner. He is very picky with his stuff and takes care of it all. This bike is MINT. Other than the fact it hasnt been on the road for a couple years. carbs are gunked up from the old gas in her, brakes dont seem to want to let go of the rotors, and all the fluids need to be changed. the tires are new, exhaust is mint. I have the original owners manual in the original plastic bag it came in. I got her for free as long as i can make her run.Ive been a auto tech for 20+ years, so it shouldnt be hard to fix her up. Ive already ordered a clymers for her. Sorry for the long post, I'll be around asking lotsa ?'s. Hope to talk to ya all.......Thanks,,,,Dmint

Man... you got a great deal on a great bike.

Plenty of tips on carb removal and cleaning to be found here, as well as brake system woes and remedies. I always recommend a compression check just to get a general idea of what's goin' on; may be advantageous to adjust the valves now instead of later.

Man, did you EVER get a great deal on a great bike!!

Welcome. Carbs are easy.. well, after the 2nd or 3rd time... or 4th... they get easier each time. Chances are good that you won't need any parts. Just spray carb cleaner and a compressed air source. Not advisable to "dip" the carb bodies as there are seals around the throttle shafts that could be damaged by the cleaner.

Brake system probably requires, at the very least, teardown and cleaning of the calipers. If that doesn't solve it, then the return or "spooge" hole in the master cylinder is plugged. On the left of this page, there is a section called "Tech Tips" that contains this fix, and solutions to a host of other common problems.

Good deal.. we're almost neighbours. Been thru Jackson many times. We'll have to go for a ride when the snow melts. I occasionally meet up with a few friends in Witmore(think that's it.. off US23) Lake for breakfast and a ride.
