    Hey folks,
    First time I have had the chance to run and bring my ’79 SF to operating temperature since working on it all summer. Carbs rebuilt and vacuumed sync’d, timing adjusted, new plugs and oil and filter and she fired up and was running awesome. While the bike’s been sitting well over a year, it purred like a kitten at idle and hauled when I gave it a bit. However, I did notice some blue smoke coming from all the cylinders when rev’d up where the smoke eventually cleared up on cylinders 1 and 2 after a short 2 km ride. No insurance and it’s about to snow up here so I kept it short. The other cylinders 3 and 4 still blow some blue. Should I be concerned or should I give it a bit more time and go on a real ride. I would hate to have to do a ring job … I just want to ride come spring. Is it likely that the rings haven’t set yet or something like that given the length of time the bike sat and are allowing some short-lived blow-by? I did not do a compression test, but there’s only 40,000 original kms (24,000 miles) on the engine. Any thoughts?

    get plenty of miles on it before you think about stripping the top end, my GSX1100 puffed a bit of smoke out when i first got it but it had sat for quite a while. it now runs sweet and no more smoke.

      I'm no expert. Ride it, you can't make it worse. These bikes are tough.

        Some of my revivals made heavy smoke for 15 minutes after the first start.

          Thanks everyone, makes me feel a lot better. I've put a lot time and money into this bike over the past year and was about to winterize and have it ready for spring. This would just be another setback to deal with when I thought I was ready to go.

            My current ride sat for a long time. It still smokes a little when starting, but doesn't use any oil to speak of. As everyone said, ride it for about 1K before you try to decide what it needs.
