kick start?

I do not know why it did not work for you mine works fine ,
I have used the kicker a lot morer than you would think.

I could even add kick to my 82 xj ,just need all the parts, lever gears spring etc... the plug in the cover comes right out! saw 1 on ebay last year and my buddy talked me out of it. He's one of those practical guys. ticks me off. But when I added an oil cooler he gave me praise. Go figure !

Ive got a folding kickstart on my 'ol warhorse... Actually, You can probably put me in the 'young and dumb' category cuz I'm seriously considering dumping 30 pounds of 'XS' weight in the form of the battery and starter.

I've got one of the capacitor thingys to replace it, But Im a little worried about the effects it will have on the ignition box

As far as I know it can't be done...Yamaha electronic iggys require a battery.

From what i under stand about capacitors they story energy for a shorttime. It would take a few kicks to get the voltage to get spark, in theroy. But I think a small dry cel battery at 12 volts like we use to use on out race bike for a total loss system. But we went a step futher taking out stator and flywheel magnets, keeping the pickup coil and other key stuff but i'm getting off track. Back to point You still have 12v to get "black box" and coils putting out spark for that kick start to work. And drop the weight of a wet cell battery and starter motor. Just a thought!

To use capacitor to replace the battery will only work on a bike with a permanent magnet alternator. The electro magnet alternator on the XS11 has to have power to make power. You could kick until hell freezes over and nada...

I was pointing out a theory, was not stating fact. The info about a total loss system is fact. A small dry cell battery in my old race bike would last about 4 hrs before it would start missing. If my xj had a kicker I would ditch the wet cell and go dry and cut out 10 more lbs. BUT keep the charging circut.

wonder how arctic cat sleds works that batteryless EFI. They need enough juice to get the computer to messure air temp and build fuel pressure. All in 2 pulls of the cord ! not bad for some boys in the frozen Tundra. I need to take my cat apart and bolt it to my xj. Fuel injection battery-less.

IMO it's a good idea, you can start with low battery if you have a kick starter. If your battery is dead it won't work since the iggy requires some battery current. I did on occasion bump start my XJ750 when the battery was low and wished that Yamaha had included a kick starter on those bikes. It is common in Australia to replace the alternators on XS650s with pemanent magnet alternators from RDs which allows battery eliminators to be used. Can this be done on the XS11?

That's the whole mechanism.

In addition to the lever, you'll also need the seal that fits into the clutch cover ( to replace the plug ).

Adding a Kick Start...

Overall, about how long would it take to add a kick start to 78 XS11 ... and roughly how difficult of a job would it be? I actually wished not too long ago, that my 1100 had one, when I saw the 650 I'm planning on buying for my SWMBO.

I think overall, it would be a great "just in case" addition.
