A Riddle

In time long ago and in land far away a motorcyclist was about to take a test ride on a bike he was thinking about buying. He kicked the bike to life and raised the side stand. Then he looks at the owner and asks " Is up up, or is up Down".

What was that all about?

He was inquiring as to the gear shift pattern. Ours is actually Down, then up, up, up, up for going from neutral to 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

Some bikes are different in that you push down to shift into higher gears, etc!

And not to mention on the other side. Would like some of todays riders get on a pre 70's Triumph, BSA, Norton etc and try figure out the shifter.

My Norton is down for up, and thats a blast when going through gears hard. Can you say "STOMP---STOMP---STOMP"?

Got to get that thing back together, 60 something horsepower and 400 pounds, it's about the ultimate stoplight sprinter. And not to mention that featherbed frame. Love my XS, but sure miss that british handling. Anybody put an XS motor in Norton frame?

You guys are mere youngsters. My first bike, a 1945 HD (used) had a 3-speed, hand operated shift lever on the left side of the gas tank. No "Up" or "Down" explanation needed......

hi i live in bangor nsw australia
my early raceing years were on british bikes on dirt tracks.then upgraded to a jap (english speedway motor) with a 4 speed norton box 60hp and about 110pounds running on a racing fuel.it was fun stomping on the gearleaver just down.

Oh yea? My third bike was a 1947 Indian Chief, Throttle on the left grip, spark advance on the right grip, shifter on the right side of the tank and the clutch engaged oppsite of the harly, don't remember which way, forward release, back engage?

Bet it was fun trying to keep that thing from handgranading! What did you do about rods, these seem to be the weak link. I have put a set of Commando rods in my bike, much more material then the old ones.

the jap engine is a speedway engine full rebuild evey year crank rods barings ect.running on a (methonal) racing fuel 14.1 comp ratio and rev to 7.5 rpm the dont stay together long with out maintince.

winter in sydney australia can rid now and then on sunny days
