  • I give! *&^%%$# fuel line question!

OK, I give... I had to unhook the rubber fuel lines to take off the tank to do the valve shims with my friend... and several of them, being old, broke... decided to replace the relly short ones, and I went to autozone, got what looked like the right vacuum hose, and put it on... seemed a little looser than the old, but I figured it wasn't as brittle, maybe... after one ride, the tubes started to slip off, leading to a nice gas spill in my back yard... aaugh! so, I went to the local bike shop and got some smaller tubing, it was a bear to put on, but I figured I am set to go! After two weeks of rain I finally got (I thought) a chance to take a ride today... started to put gas in, and lo and behold all the new tubes had split, and another nice gas spill... so, now I am doing what I should have done in the first place, ask the experts! What kind of &^$%% tubing is the right kind, and where do I get it????

I went to Napa and spent a little extra on a marine type see through fuel line. It was about 12 buck for the 4 feet that I bought. I bought yellow, but blue, clear and red are available. The Napa I bought from only had the yellow in stock Looks like it wouldn't stand up to fuel but evedentlly that's what they're made for.

            Gas leak?

I'm sitting here wondering why you left the gas tank valve on prime. If you turn it to either of the two other positions no gas will come out without engine vacuum.

I am not known for my intelligence! the petcock was on the "on" position, I just leave it there usually and don't think about it. I guess the gas came out because the line was broken?

Or perhaps the petcock is messed up?

Hey Jazz, are you saying that gas came out of the small vacuum lines that connect the carbs to the the petcocks? That's not right...

The vacuum hook-up to the petcock is what is supposed to open it for gas flow. If gas leaks out when the engine is off, you have a petcock problem; if gas leaks out of the vacuum lines to the carbs, you have a big petcock problem!

I don't know if you have a petcock problem or not. But,, On your SF, you have on,off, pri, and res. On my SF, fuel will flow with the tank off of the bike in any position but off. Run lets fuel in from the top of the pick up tube, reserve bottom of the pick up tube, pri, constant from the bottom of the petcock, and off, self expainatory. Mabee mines wrong but it works with no problems, Has been that way since I've owned it and it will stay that way cause it works.

Czekus is right. On a Special, fuel will flow from any position but 'OFF'. If it still flows in the off position, then the petcocks need a new valve inside. That is the rubber disc with the three holes in it. Sometimes you can turn the disc over and it will work.
