  • Indian Larry killed in bike crash

    http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observe...al/9533189.htm

Regardless of whether or not you like choppers, Indian Larry was a arguably a true artist and a very interesting fellow. He will be missed.
Hi my name is Tony and I'm a bikeoholic.

The old gray biker ain't what he used to be.

That makes me want to wear a helmet more often. I hate to admit that I hardley use it. I know I should too.

I have not watched all those 'biker build-offs' but I did catch the one between Indian Larry and 'straight-line and pretty' builder - maybe the West Coast Chopper guy. I remember the WCC bike would not start and Larry was helping him, for a real long time, get it started. Maybe that was for effect on TV, I think it was for real, and I thought it was very gentlemanly.

Helmets - I never leave home without it. On.

It was real when he helped Billy Lane to fix his bike. He ended up winning that leg of the build-off and then cut the trophy in half. He gave half of it to Billy.

Even on TV the other bikers were saying he was "Crazy". He can be seen Standing in the Saddle of a 42? Chopper, going down the freeway. Or laying back with feet over the bars. He built some pretty sweet bikes. , i would be proud to ride any of them.

I agree... I saw the episode where he helped Billy Lane and I thought that was a very classy thing to do. He could have just said "Tough Luck. This is a competition. " He'd have been perfectly within the rules to have done so, but by helping the other guy out and then letting the chips fall where they may earned him a TON of respect from me.

BTW - I really liked his old school bikes, too. While I admire the craftmanship of some of the bikes on "American Chopper", if it was mine I would definitely build it Indian Larry style.

              On the helmet issue....

I'm not riding without one. If others choose to do so, that's their decision. It's a risky proposition though. Some crashes aren't survivable. A lot more are with a helmet on.

He will be missed. I'll tell ya though, I don't were a helmet very often, I don't think thats as nuts as standing on a seat, puttin down the hyway, without any type of safety gear. Like I said when a couple of friends of mine got hit head on a couple of years ago. They died doin what they loved to do. When your time is up, It don't matter what your doin or where your at. When it's up, It's up and you got no say so in the matter.

                  Bummer,

He was to be here in Ocean City this next week. I had planned to bring my brother here for a weekend of bikes and more. Larry was the key ingredient for the weekend. There are some other guys but none of them with the Rep of Indian Larry.

                  He will be missed.

I too turned into a non-helmet wearer while riding through my neighborhood. I let another biker friend talk me into not wearing it one day while we took a quick ride. I worked on my bike yesterday and took it for a spin with my helmet on. I plan on using it from now on no matter how short the trip. I saw the biker build off and was surprised how classy he was. He will be missed...

Sorry to see him go. He seemed the most genuine of the popular bike builders out there. Not into being a celebritiy like most of the others on tv seem to be. Plus his "old school but ridable" style was cool.
