It's actually kinda like this across all of the web-based forums now. Everything in on the FB groups. I actually really enjoy the FB groups. It's so instantaneous. My Lincoln, Triumph, Yamaha, and gun groups are awesome. I highly encourage everybody to join. However, I always recommend everybody to join the forum for the knowledge bank.

I like both as well. Problem with facebook is that posts get lost so fast, and searching for a post on facebook is almost harder than it is here!Nathan

Xs's
I'm just getting ready to take mine out of hibernation. We are still getting snowfalls up here but it looks like the worst is over for this winter. Roads and intersections are still covered with road salt and we haven't had much rain to wash the sand out of the intersections so I'm just going to wake them up, tune them and clean them until it will be suitable riding weather. I'm in my mid sixties and me knees just won't take the cold and wet riding anymore. I won't get rid of mine until it's time to stop riding altogether.mack

The UK forum/club is suffering the same with Facebook too.

Lack of participation?
I've noticed this with the XSEast turnout. Looks like it'll be a smaller group this year.
I think its an issue of demographics. These bikes were only made 78-83 or thereabouts. Because of the limited production there isn't much opportunities for young folks to catch the fever, there's not too many runners out there (but I do know someone who wants to sell his). Some of us are original owners, others gravitated to the XS but now for the most part both bikes and riders are getting long in tooth. And most of us have moved on to other rides; after 35 years I could no longer consider my 78E reliable, though its still in the garage, needing some work - engine rings.)
My two cents.Darrell

Well,
Thanks to Ian and NateMoen, a glitch in the CONTACT US applet of the site was keeping possible new members from being able to contact me/Admin email to request membership! I had noticed that nobody had contacted the ADMIN email for many weeks, but thought the lack of traffic was due to the increased popularity of the FB site/group.
I have since fixed/turned OFF the Captcha part so that folks can then Contact the Admin email account. I've also PM's Ian and Nate with this info and also provided the actual ADMIN email address if they wanted to post it on the FB site for folks to use to request membership.
My grandson has moved back to VA from Texas, will be working at the Naval Airbase, going to college to get a degree before going back into the NAVY.
However, he decided he wanted to resurrect the 79 SF that I have had in the garage for 10+ years. It's a total basket case, and he wants a CAFE style machine, which is fine with me. He's an aircraft mechanic from his training in the Navy before he got out. One day he asked me if it was okay for him to work on it, told him SURE. The next day I look in the garage and he had the bike down to the frame, engine out, etc.! The next day he had the head off, jugs and pistons off, side cases, clutch boss, middle drive, and then I helped him to get the countershaft gear assembly out for inspection and possible Dremmeling as a preventative measure. The busted Speedo showed ~35k miles.
I had given him instructions on how to get the cams and sprockets off, but he noticed that the cam chain seemed like it slipped a tooth while rotating the crank to get access to the other side of the cam sprocket bolts, etc.! Thankfully getting the head off, the valves looked OKAY, not bent, but looks like 3 of the valves were replaced, didn't have the Yamaha tuning forks stamped on them compared to all of the other valves. So...we think the PO had been in there before, replaced several valves due to cam chain wear and skipping getting valve timing off, but then didn't REPLACE the worn cam chain, probably skipped a tooth and wouldn't start, and so why it was abandoned when I got it! The cylinders looked clean, so we'll be going back in with the OEM pistons/rings, possibly a light hone.
I'm working with him giving him suggestions on mods that will make it stronger, safer, ie. SS brake lines, the H-D dual pistons front calipers mod. It's an SF, but will be putting on some Standard forks/sliders which are much easier to MOD with the calipers! Yep, he wants it ALL BLACK, going to call it "NIGHTMARE", but understands the importance of good lighting and visibility to see and be seen.
Haven't created an account for him yet, so I can't tell you his username. I think he's posted on FB, but just his personal page, not the XS11 group.

ok I'm not going to lie, this post makes me a little sad
I'm a younger rider and new to the XS1100; so far all I've done is ride it home, then tear it apart. I was hoping the restore would be done by now but, as always, it's taking longer than expected. My goal is to get it back to factory-spec, ride-able, and reliable condition. Then, I'm hoping to keep it going for years to come.
This site and it's members was instrumental in me choosing an XS1100 and starting to restore it. If I hadn't found this site, I probably wouldn't have bought the bike. Seeing how much information was available on this site and how helpful the members were was definitely a selling point for me.
I'm also in the Facebook group but consider it a supplement, not a replacement, of this site. I often find people go there for quick "give me the shortcut" type answers. I've sometimes pointed them to this site and other times not bothered because if they really want to know, the information isn't that difficult to find.80 SG Canada

While i no longer have an XS1100 i am still here daily. I would like another vintage ride soley for the rallies and an occaisional day trip..but not as my daily rider. I'm debating the XS/XJ550s..650s and 750s and wether i should pick up one of those..Way back in 1990 I owned an 82 XJ750 Maxim and it was a great ride..so all is not lost... but the main thing to take from this group for me isnt so much the motorcycle anymore..but the friendship..the knowledge and the one rally I attend now @ XSSE...its still exciting so we're far from done....Yeah we dont owe each other a thing but I still love these old bikes..always will...Last edited by madmax-im; 04-28-2018, 05:11 AM.1980 XS650G Special-Two

Dan- A "supplement" is a perfect description of the FB group. That's why I constantly encourage members on the FB groups to join our .com forums. In no way could the knowledge from this site be duplicated onto the FB site. What I do like about the FB site is the Euro riders adding their knowledge, as I always thought they had more customization experience like Mathh.1979 XS1100F

I still check in fairly often
The Facebook site is in no way meant to be a replacement for this site
Supplement is an excellent term for it
There’s WAY too much excellent info here and we often redirect the more difficult and involved issues here where they can be handled at a slower pace without the post vanishing after a day or two
This place never really recovered after the mass exodus in 2010
