  • Introduction

    Hi all,

Last weekend I bought a 1978 XS Eleven that was already someones project.
The bike has supposedly sat for years in a garage with 2445 original miles. The guy I bought it from had plans for it but started having children and never found the time. He was in the process of replacing the tank due to rust in the old one. He has periodically started and ran it using a gas can and length of fuel hose he has also changed all the fluids twice. He sold it to me with a replacement tank he found from Utah and a pair of clean petcocks with new gaskets. I have pulled apart and cleaned the sending unit and tested it to confirm it still works. I am in the process today of putting all the tank pieces back together and will add some fuel to verify no leaks then drain and mount back on the bike. As far as I can tell the bike has not been cut up or messed with much at all but it is in need of plenty of TLC.

And..... starts won't run. Getting fuel to the carbs but.....what now? A lil squirt of start fluid gets it started but I cant keep it running.
        Pull the carbs?

I mean, thats a lot to swallow. Carbs been rebuilt? Vacuum lines in good repair? Petcocks functioning?

The petcocks are functioning. I don't think the carbs have been rebuilt and I'll check the vacuum lines.

The fact that it starts with a squirt of starting fluid but won't stay running makes me think it's not getting fuel. Fuel is flowing from the petcocks when I manually apply vacuum. Maybe I should pull a float bowl and see if it has fuel? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be to do a complete carb rebuild foowing the forum's FAQ in the top banner of the page. After that, read the article entitled "Do you just bought a used bike", or something similar to that.

Enrichment circuit clogged. Clean the carbs. "Clean" is not a very representative word for what a set of carbs require if those carbs spent years sitting with fuel in them.

A much better word would be "agonize". If you want one of these bikes to run well, you better embrace the carbs. Lots of time and effort will pay off. Otherwise the bike is yard art.

If the bike never had fuel filters and the tank did any amount of rusting, there will be lots of very small rust particles in every nook and cranny of the carbs. My 1982 XJ650 had lots of rust particles all over the carbs. The enrichment circuits were also all clogged. Its par for the course.

                    Thank's for the suggestions.
I pulled the carbs and using the Carb cleaning 101 thread here I managed to get the lower end of the carbs cleaned up. As you can see the fuel left in them had turned and only the #4 had new fuel in the bowl. I got everything cleaned up and back together then the bike started up easy. Lot's more to do but now there is light at the end of the tunnel. Here are a few pics I will update on the progress moving forward. Knowing the bike runs now I have more incentive to invest funds and time into getting it on the road.

That fuel system from tank bottom to engine needs to be spotless or it will give problems somewhere down the line.
I know it may run great but leave you on the side of the road later,(don't ask how I know this !)

Absolutely. My short fast goal was to see if the bike even ran. Now that I know it will I am exited to to spend the winter thoroughly going over the bike to learn all about it and make sure all is up to par. It will be a fun way to relax and get my mind off the troubles of the world. For me this is therapeutic.

                            You

may have a different approach but I made sure the petcocks did not leak then a bottle of Chevron Techron in the tank (not Chevron with Techron, weaker). Topped it off with non ethanol and let it sit on the shelf for a month. My troubles were gone after that.
