  • What's your craziest roadkill fix?

So I've been watching a lot of Motor Trend's Roadkill program, and it got me thinking about some of the nutty vehicular fixes I've seen. The one that sticks in my mind was years ago when a buddy of mine was preparing to take his future wife out on their first date. Trouble was he drove an old Pontiac Grand Prix (circa 1970) and the headlights didn't work. So he went to a hardware store and picked up two flashlights. You older folks will remember the type - two D Cell batteries, an incandescent bulb that would throw a light all of about ten yards, and a big square block with magnets on the side. So he stuck the flashlights to the hood of his GP with the magnets, turned them on, and off he went to collect the future Mrs. Roberts.

Probably not the craziest thing he ever did - that same car had a beer keg installed in the trunk, and the tap was installed via a hole in the rear seat right in the center of the seat back. That was a long time ago, and I'm sure they'd put you under the jail if you installed that particular modification today.

So what's the craziest fix you've witnessed? I'm sure some of you have some good ones....
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

A little foil, left overs on the engine,no need to look for a place to eat.
Clutch cable broke, dug a hole thru the handle and took a plate bolt and wrapped cable around it and stuck it in and readjusted clutch..worked for years.

Hamster on a stick is pretty good with some hot sauce as far as road kill goes.

Shoe Laces to the windshield wipers.....

        dbeardslee,
My father (not at all known for any mechanical abilities) was running along on a rainy day with all the kids in the car when the wipers stopped working. He took the shoe laces from all our shoes, tied them to the wipers and my mother pulled them back & forth (though the slightly cracked front windows) so he could see where he was going in the rain. I was a youngster but remember it well. I never done anything that would come close to compare to it....

Fast tire repair. Little off roading in my truck hit something that poked a tire. Pulled a screw out of the dash and screwed it into the hole. Got me home.

That's a good one. Kind of reminds me of the old chewing gum tin foil fix for a blown glass fuse.

                  Exhaust Fix

On a motorcycle run a few years ago and my exhaust cracked at the muffler. Used the old beer can around the pipe trick. Rode 1200 miles with it like that until the can gave up the goose and I could get it repaired properly.

I started this thread just for fun, but now I'm starting to think it may actually have some value when it comes to getting your vehicle back to where you can fix it properly. I've seen a couple good ideas already.

                      Way back in my VW Bug days;

Throttle cable broke, tied a piece of wire to the carb and ran it over the car. Pulled on the wire with my hand out the window to get home.

Ran a tire to the cords and it blew 30 miles from home. Had a jack but no lug wrench. Jacked it up and wrapped the tire in duct tape. Had to put air in every couple of miles to got home. It was slow but I got there
Sad thing is I still drive one( a different and nicer one). A 1964 Bug.

mlew - you're signature reminds me of something I told my boss years ago. I came in late one morning, and he asked me why I was late. I said, "I had car trouble." He said, "What was wrong with your car?" And I said, "I didn't get in it early enough."

Years ago I was out hunting when the wiper linkage on my old CJ 5 broke.only thing I had other than some tools was an old curtain rod. You know, the flat extendable type. Anyway, punched a hole in it with a screwdriver, bolted it up to the driver side wiper linkage behind the dash and drove the 80 miles home in the snow, twisting my wrist sideways to keep the windshield clear.

Another time, my younger brothers brakes were worn to the metal and he couldn't afford pads so he got dads scroll saw and some 1x2 furring strips and made his own. He picked me up from work and every time he had to stop it smelled like a campfire. I asked him what the smell was so he told me what he did, Needless to say we stopped at the nearest parts store and I fixed his brakes in the parking lot.
