I.D. This Fairing? Yamaha? Unknown....

    Which one ?

    Kurt,
    I apologize for taking so long to reply, just couldn't seem to find time to mock up the fairing on my SF til yesterday.
    You're correct on the XJ 750 turns in that they won't mount with the Sport fairing, but they will with the Shoei, just don't know which one I'm gonna go with on my SF. Either way they'll both be used as my Son's SH will get the remaining one, but he is hoping for the SHoei

    Here's some pics:
    First two pics are the Shoei with the XJ turns



    Next two are the Sport fairing mounting bracket, you can see that the XJ 750 turns won't mount with this bracket, also you'll notice the mounting holes with grommets for the stock turns



    Last two are the Sport fairing with stock turns, which if I can fix the holes the PO drilled into it I just may go with it and give the Shoei to my son

      Strange how we both have two unusual and hard-to-find identical fairings and the same bikes (mine is an SG the bike destined for my son is an SH). This is too weird....

      Here is mine MOCKED-UP (son's SH in the background)




      Although I haven't much time lately with a number of other distractions and projects, I was able to prime and then squirt this real quick with some body color. I may have to wet-sand and re-shoot it but that's easy.

      Some comparisons......
      • Personally, I think the Yamaha fairing is more attractive when looking at the bike. When sitting on the bike, the Shoei is better from the driver's perspective. I have yet to actually DRIVE the SG with this as it is just a mock-up.
      • I like that there is no need to move the signals with the Shoei as my signal ground wires BARELY made the distance back into the headlamp housing when moved for the Yamaha unit.
      • A handle bar adjustment is much more difficult with the Shoei since it is bar mounting.
      • I'm also sure I can figure out a way to stash the GPS unit UNDER the Yamaha fairing which would be absolutely impossible with the SHOEI.
      • The OEM Yamaha has some SLIGHT resemblance to the currently popular "Bat Wing" designs (I did say slight). Whereas the Shoei is more "Boxy"
      • The OEM Yamaha will definitely provide more and taller wind protection.
      • The Yamaha mounting kit provides a SOLID mounting, the slide clips that attach under the OEM signal mounts for the front of the SHOEI are an absolute PITA to get in there.
      • When we have to get back into the headlamp for some reason the Yamaha unit is going to be a heck of a lot easier to pull and re-mount quickly.


      Both of these have their strengths, but I think I'll like the OEM Yamaha a lot better in rain and for a long ride.

      Currently, our photos are probably the only ones anywhere on the web of the OEM Yamaha Accessory Fairing.

      I should have mine all done this weekend and get a chance to see how it performs.........

      P.S. The OEM Yamaha kit is great, EXCEPT.... 35+ years on the shelf and the rubber grommets are no longer rubber ....more like ROCKS . Managed to get the signal grommets in the metal brackets but I'm thinking of heating those for the fairing else I crack the fairing fighting them in.... OUCH! (I tried HOT water to no avail, next step is the TORCH!).

        Kurt,
        Go to your auto paint supply store and ask for Gold Eagle 303 Aerospace Protectant. It's not cheap, but it will do wonders for the old, hard rubber parts. I used it when I did my '79 last year, and it softened up all the tank mounts, etc. Put it on at least an hour before use, or just "soak" the part in it for about an hour to really soften up the rubber.
        It will make all the rubber bits look new, as well.

          It's been around for several yrs. now. Ace or TrueValu also stock it in the pump spray bottles. Works good on rubber parts and also tested it rejuvenating a hardened padded dash.....soft, clean and pliable as new again.

            +1 on 303 Products

            I use the 303 AP all the time along with the 303 High tech fabric guard and like Ray says costly but does the job.

            The blue looks great on your bike I'm probably gonna stay with black and only have the tank and sidecovers the cardinal red.

            Looking at the two of your bikes together gives me a good view of both fairings mounted and I like the Sport fairing a little more than the Shoei only with the Sport fairing I had to lower my Euro handlebars so the levers wouldn't hit which leans me forward a little more than I want. I may have to remove the bar risers I have on now and switch them for set back risers.

            I can see the height difference in your first pic, I didn't realize the Sport shield was that high but it doesn't take away from the looks at all.

              Eagle 303 AP

              Thank you for the information on that 303 AP product.

              I will run over to ACE & TrueValue this morning to see if either have it. Better to spend a couple bucks on that product than crack the fairing fighting the bushings into it!

              If I can get the grommets into the fairing..... RIDE TIME!

                It looks great! Can you post some pictures of the two fairings from the rider's point of view? It's just to add to the growing collection on the web you understand.

                    XS11 Folks,
                    Managed to get the bushings in using the bride's hair dryer. It was too early here in Georgia to get anything from ACE or TrueValue as they open late on Sunday. The hair dryer worked great at softening them up.... I also installed a nice new windscreen seal (will post data in product evaluation area) and got 'er all done and ready to ride.

                    The charming bride and I took a spin down to our favorite weekend ride and put about 120 miles on the new fairing.....

                    Post Ride Reaction:
                    I LOVE IT, ALMOST!

                    • The OEM windshield is just too tall for my 5'11" frame. I tried to get use to it, but I just couldn't do it.
                    • I prefer to look OVER a fairing/windshield NOT through it. I can look over it IF I sit perfectly straight up but that's just not a comfortable position for me. When I am in a relaxed position the windshield it is just too tall.
                    • I'm planning on removing the windshield and chopping it down by 3". That SHOULD be enough to give me a nice view over it but also allow me to have the wind protection. I can also slouch down a little and hide behind it if the rain & snow get to be too much
                    • The fairing "wings" wiggle and jiggle a little at low speed over bumps and cracks in the road. However, at higher speed it's nice and stable without the wiggles & jiggles.
                    • I managed to "stash" my TomTom GPS inside the fairing on the left side. I don't think this made the wiggles and jiggles.


                    Here's the driver's view pics of these windscreens:
                    Please note the DEAD DUCK has several non OEM components including different bars, mirrors, etc. The Shoei is a better fit for this machine. It is a little CLEANER (?) look for this one in my opinion

                    The Yamaha Accessory fairing (ACC-11144-XX-00) has a kinda BLACK HOLE look over the instruments. BUT, it gives me a little room to STASH some stuff like the GPS and possibly another similar item or two (iPhone6?). This machine has stock bars and is generally a stock XS11.


                    I do like the Yamaha fairing enough that I come across another, it will find a home on my Ugly Duck XS11 (My Green One).
