  • Locking the rear tire...

Last night I found out that I can lock up the rear tire on my XJ even with the linked brakes.

We recently put my mom into a care facility, so I was on my way to visit her. It was about 8:00 pm. I was following a Dodge Ram about 2 seconds behind them going 45 MPH. He turns his right signal on to pull into the Maverick and I notice a car looking to come out of the parking lot. As the truck slows down and pulls over to make the turn I proceed to pass them… The car proceeds to pull out making a left turn right in front of me. I have no time to think yet it also seemed like an eternity. I could see that the lady was looking to her right and not at me. The child in the passenger seat started screaming. I hit both the front and rear brakes hard, the rear tire locks up and slides around to be 90* from the direction I am going. I was heading right at the back part of her front tire. All that I could think was “My family could not handle this at this time”. My wife just got out of the hospital 2 hours before after being diagnosed with cancer. My kid’s emotional state would not handle me being hurt or killed at this time plus I need to take care of my wife while she goes through chemo.

I was probably 5 Feet away from her and instinctively I let off the brakes and turned the wheel to the left some. The bike literally jumped forward passed the front of her car. She must have reacted and hit her brakes or she would have ran over me, I was inches from her front bumper. My bike fishtailed back and forth a few time but I managed to stay on it and got control back.

I did not stop. I hit the throttle and continued on as if nothing happened. I knew if I stopped I would have beaten the crap out of the lady in front of her kids. I rode on to the care facility and had a nice visit with my mom then rode home.

Sorry I meant to put this in the Members Lounge.

    Moved it for you.
Glad you made it!! I've had one or two close calls myself, so I DO know what happens when the adrenalin kicks in. Riding on WAS the best thing, as nothing was touched, and the lady will probably hear about that from the kids for the rest of her life.

Had a close call the other day, and kept chugging along. Then, that night I almost hit a biker pulling out of my sub. I simply dod not see him. He stopped and gave me an earful.

          Glad you're OK

          Ty,

Glad that was just a close call and not an accident. Sounds like your instincts kicked in and you made the right moves. Good to hear you're OK.

Sorry to hear the news about your wife, thoughts and prayers to you and the family...

Sorry to hear about your wife... man.

Nice riding and survival instinct! The ones that don't have it don't live to tell about it but there's a proportioning valve in the brake system for the front/rear line pressure, you might want to check and clean it when you have time.

Unfortunate news for sure. I can't imagine how I'd deal if it was my wife, or me, for that matter. My heart goes out to you. She'll win the fight. You have to believe.

XS11 with linked brakes is an old machine. It's great, for what it is. I push the lever on my SG and the back locks down, NOW! You can hang on to that without a high side incident, you're either extremely good or extremely lucky. At this point, who cares. As you said, this is a bad time to have an accident.

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers it means a lot. My wife is a fighter she will get though this.

As far as my riding ability I think its more of being to dumb to know that you can't do that with these bikes. It helped that I had enough time to hot the brakes and make some kind of move. Brant had no time to do anything and I'm sure he is a better rider than I am.

Thanks for sharing about your riding and about your wife. Two different extremes of the spectrum, riding can be 95% "boredom" ( uneventful, normal) and 5% sheer terror. Life and love can feel the same way too but in totally different way. We're part of the big family keep us posted and we're all praying for you guys.

Ty, sorry to hear about your wife. At least she has a good man like you by her side.

On my XJ, I locked up the rear tire once and went for a nice slide down the road. It can dump you real quick.

                          Ty,

Keep us posted on how your wife is doing with the treatments. Big C is a stressful ordeal but with support and good Docs & Nurses & technology can be whipped. Getting into the treatment routine has to be an ordeal itself for the whole family. Just wanted to let you know your family is in our thoughts & prayers.

Quite an almost story. Scary when kid in the back seat is looking but the driver isn't.
Good thing you kept going because in heat of the moment that would have been ugly confrontation with that driver.

As for my riding skills........there definitely not there anymore after the T-bone crash. I now just call it 'physically challanged'.....and take what we take for granite as a challenge,...... and do it a different way now.
Glad your okay, and prayers have been going out for your wife.
