    Engage the Paint Store Technicians

    3Phase & Ben,
Thank you for the compliment. I still hope to find a bit of time somewhere along the line to lightly wet sand and buff JeffH's tank. That project was planned (at first) to be just a fuse block change and blossomed into much more. I am extremely happy to have been able to do that work for my friend and make the short deadline for departure to Colorado.

    RE: Painting.
I am getting better every time I do this kind of work. Looking at some of my stuff from 5-6+ years ago (Trans Am & Z-28) I'm disappointed in that work. I need to get back to those sometime soon.

If there is any valuable advice I can give toward painting it would be this. Properly engage the people at the paint store. I've been buying paint from the same PPG store for several years and I don't even pretend to know much of anything when I speak to them. When I go in for paint, if there is a body shop guy there getting supplies, I step aside and wait till he is completely serviced (or gone) before I start asking my stupid questions. I don't want to distract them when they are making real money.

I am sure if I approached PPG like a "know-it-all" the mountains of free advice and information they very cheerfully provide would not be so forthcoming. Today, I can pick up the phone and call the paint shop guy on his PERSONAL PHONE ask a question and get a solid answer. I've even driven my work over there and the main guy will come out look at it and tell me where and how to improve it. I provide a box of Krispy-Kreme donuts once in a while and that seems to grease the wheels of information too.

If this link to Onedrive doesn't work I'll try botophucket again but they've got heavy Flash content that can be irksome to use.

Okay, I really think I could and should say a little more.

          Here's Jeff's bike at Bishop's Castle:

I was riding Bonz's 'Special that's parked next to Jeff with my brandy-new jacket keeping the sun off of the mint, showroom-condition, gauges and switches.

Everyone at the rally and people he met were checking out that bike: nice work, Kurt!

                Last mock up before paint...

Fairing mount and oil cooler are now married and the original Yamaha emblems were toast so a slight variation on the theme with the tuning fork logos...I like it...painting will commence this weekend...or at least that is the plan....Oh and the wiring inside the fairing itself was butchered up so badly that none of it is of any use...fortunately Kurt has a venturer fairing he was going to turn into a man cave light...in it was an intact wiring harness...Happy happy...joy joy...

Although the paint on the tank looks ok..it is from about 10 feet but up close and personal and you can see how tired it is...everyting has to come off...down to bare metal as the old primer and old paint would not be compatible if the new paint was sprayed on over it....

Ben, hadn't ever noticed the paint was getting that bad. Gleaming in the sun it always seemed shiny and bright.
Guess during the last couple years the rate of deterioration & cracking has increased.

Will be nice to get it 'freshened' up.

Thanks Jeff..i'm so stoked about this project...the paint was tired when i took possession of her 3 yrs ago...it was nothing more than a rattle can application. We all know by now that Kurt's paint work is light years ahead of most people...so this and adding a fairing have been on the bucket list for some time now...I cant wait to show her off at XSSE...

Tired but stubborn paint...took a couple hours to sandblast it all off for good...

                          Then down to bare metal...

because were in the deep south high humidity in the air can lead to a flash rust...so flash on home and Kurt applies the first coat of primer...looking better already...
