They all say Kawasaki left a lot on the table when they programmed the CPU's.
I never really paid much attention to the abrupt ON/OFF throttle some of the guys on COG complained about... until I went to XSSE and rode The Dragon and Deal's Gap.
THEN it drove me crazy! It really showed up in the serious twisties.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

All photos by Assistant Photo Editor Michael Ortiz. The sun baked boardwalk outlining the east harbor next to San Francisco’s Fort Mason is Bob Embrey’s favorite place to read. His closest companions sit below him, quietly panting under the shade of their master’s large shopping cart stuffed with the bulging trash bags of the days gathered recyclables. Embrey’s toothy grin rarely breaks. Despite his struggles with homelessness, his optimistic attitude is infectious as the locals..."If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z. X is work. Do it! I am sure it gets the secondaries open and out of the way sooner and changes the fuel map and timing curve as well.
-With the ZRX 1200 a full system and jet kit took was a great improvement in response and power. Thought "this is perfect".
-Added a +4 deg timing advance rotor and thought "How did I live with the stock rotor"?
-Grafted on ZZR1200 CVK40 carbs, said "Holy Nuts, this is beast". Flat slide response and power, improved mpg over stock.
-Got a specific-made ECU wiring harness and swapped in a ZX11D ECU and ZX11D +4 timing rotor (ZX11D ECU needs the ZX11 specific rotor) for a more aggressive timing advance below 4,000 rpm which pepped things up even more.
-Built a harness and put on ZX14 stick coils. No power gain, but dropped a pound in weight and cleaned up the area above the valve cover by nixing the stock coils. Carbs top access is easy-peasy now as is checking plugs and removing valve cover for valve checks. And...
-Put in ZZR1200 cams, wow what a difference in the mid range and top end, with just a titch of a soft spot between 2800-3500 rpm that needs a point of compression to fill in by installing ZZR1200 pistons and pulling the base gasket (both are very common ZRX mods).
-Also have ZX11 double valve springs to install when I do the ZZR pistons that will allow me to safely access the extra 1,000 rpm the ZX11D ECU gives me up top before the event limiter kicks in (11,500 redone vs 10,500).
The CVK40 set up I more or less pioneered on the ZRX forum in conjunction with a full exhaust system has been rear wheel dyno'd at 138 hp and 84 ft/lbs (stock ZRX1200 is 110-115 hp and 80 ft/lbs). This is with a stock internal engine (stock pistons, stock cams, stock ECU). ZZR Cams, ECU, ZZR pistons and base gasket delete will put it up to the high 140 hp range if not cracking 150 rwhp. Without the pistons and base gasket delete it should be putting down a solid 145 rwhp as it sits right now.
Not sure if I'll have the pistons/base gasket delete and double valve springs done by the rally, but in any case it is already a strong runner.
And then there are the GSXR 1000 front calipers that were a straight bolt-on, custom shock valving and sprung for my weight rear shocks and up front there are sonic 1.1 springs. Overall it has gained power, improved handling and dropped 40 lbs from stock with all the mods (540lbs stock down to around 500 lbs). It slows, turns AND goes!
Anyway, Bob, I am trying to get you salivating about what your C14 would probably be like if you just take the plunge. DO IT! More power and BETTER power is always more FUN.
If there were 10 satisfied customers I would be all over it, but with 100 or more that are happy, what are you waiting for???Last edited by Bonz; 06-02-2016, 07:40 PM.Howard

Yeah, but the marvel (instantaneous response regardless of elevation, temp or whatever) of fuel injection and variable valve timing such as your C14, along with a re-flash will probably carry the day pretty easy vs carbs, no matter how well tuned.
I weigh about 290 geared up, so probably have 100lbs or a bit more on you? You are still at a weight dis-advantage I would guess, but have a King-Kong of an engine that will more than equalize.
Today I took some things to my son that he forgot when he left for his summer job on Monday as a camp counselor just outside of Westcliffe. Rode the back way and took some of the roads we'll be riding for the rally and found a great place in Guffey that does Sunday breakfast. Perfect start to that day, about a 30-40 minute ride from the campground.
Joined up to Hwy 9 just past Guffey south to Hwy 50 and rode along the Arkansas river to the junction with Hwy 69 south at Texas Creek which heads toward Westcliffe and is the very road the "missing muffler and right-turn caper" unfolded on.
Heading home I took in Skyline drive above Canon City and then beat cheeks to race the dark back to Colorado Springs and on home to Palmer Lake.
A 260 mile day and lots of great scenery and riding. Yeah, I rode the ZRX and got 50.75 mpg riding 10-15 mph over and numerous runs up the speedo when the road opens up, and a number of quick passes when needed.
The roads are in nice shape, and I will make the run down to the castle in the next week. It's a great perk to need to recon the roads a few times before the rally!Howard

The Missing Muffler and Right Turn Caper...
Cool! Now we have the drama's title... Nice! Lol...
Wow, Bonz... if you're getting 50+ mpg's from that carb'd ZRX, it must be tuned pretty well. That's awesome, man!
If you're @ 290#'s, then I get the 90# advantage there.
BUT... That still leaves a 110#'s difference of bike weight.
AND... I've added some stuff to mine, like cruise, front and rear tip-over protection, etc. I did recently shed about 18#'s of dead weight by swapping out the stock muffler to a Vance and Hines CSOne. It's amazing how heavy that stock spud launcher is! Yikes!
Should be fun times....... really looking forward to this rally.
See ya soon!

The carbs come from the ZX11/ZZR1200 and give on average a 4-5 mpg boost over stock. I just have to swap the intake boots from the ZX-11 or ZZR1200 over to the ZRX, they use the same head so it's a straight bolt on but a larger diameter to accept the 40 mm cv carbs. Stock carbs are 36 millimeter.
I am running pods with the carbs however I have a bracket that keeps the stock side covers so you'd never know it's not an air box under there.
Ultimately I really need to put it on a Dyno with an air fuel sniffer to see how everything is working. Seat of the pants says it's doing pretty well though.
Yeah the stock exhaust systems are boat anchors. The ZRX lost about 24 pounds alone when I went to a full header and slip on.
Riding those roads yesterday made me think back to last rally and look forward to this one!Howard
