Yeah, I imagine a soak would take the paint right off. I think a piece of thin guitar string would be the best tool to try and open up those bowl jets. They're thin enough to go through the orifice but stiff enough that you can apply some pressure. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

      It can be

difficult to hit the center of the meter with a small wire fished down the hole. If you have one that is blowing clear. Test the lenght of the wire on it then check to see if your hitting the hole correctly. If you have a compresor with the attachent for blowing up sports balls, alternate the wire, then carb cleaner then air and repeat until it blows clear.
I had my carbs powder coated, and they resist gas perfectly and I'm very satisfied with the look.

Alright Mack thats just rubbing it in. The carbs look fantastic and 3 sets to boot. Are the gold tops original or did you have them powdered?

            Tops

no they were plated. However I'm working with a guy right now on a powder for the gold. I'll keep you advised on how it looks. Most gold I've seen so far usually has a greenish tinge to it but this stuff could be different.

              Ultrasonic Cleaner

You can get a very good 5-7 gallon heated ultrasonic cleaner for $500-$600 range with free shipping. Big enough for a bank of carbs. I use the Branson aircraft aluminum cleaner. Gets carbs perfectly clean. Use it for a lot of other parts as well.

That's one of those things where you'd have to ask yourself how often you're going to use it. If you've got LOTS of relatively big stuff that you need to clean in a sonic cleaner, $500-600 may be reasonable. If you're just trying to get one set of carbs cleaned... you could probably find a couple nice, already cleaned carb racks for that kind of dough. If all you really need to do is open up some bowl jets - there are far cheaper ways to do the deed.

If I was a young guy just starting out in the tool accumulation game, I think the first tool I'd buy in that kind of price range is a good air compressor. That's something you can use for all kinds of stuff (including blowing out carbs), and a good one will last a long, long time.

Very true............got 21yrs. of use on my oill free 30gal. compressor, and it still builds up to 120psi quickly. With the 80ft. hose, makes for a handy option blowing out sprinkler system also.

There's just so many things you can do with a compressor. It's one of those tools that, after you've got one, you wonder how you ever got along without it.

I had an old Coleman with a 20 gallon tank and an oilless compressor that I bought around 1985, and the check valve gave out this past summer. It was a good compressor, but it would make you jump out of your skin every time that screaming oilless kicked in. I replaced it with a 30 gallon Kobalt with an oiled compressor and I'm really likin' how much more quiet it runs. I figure it's probably the last compressor I'll ever have to buy.

Tools... they're what separate us from the animals.

                          If you

know someone who has one and you really want to sell her on getting one of your own, have her give you some of her old dirty jewlery. Take it to your friends machine and give it a heated cycle or two. She'll buy you one for x-mas.

Ok so I took a chance on getting a 6 liter cleaner on evilbay. Arrived today so I went to cleaning. Liked how it was working but the smoke, burnt wire smell, and very hot front panel after 5 min concerned me. Decided Would give the seller a chance to correct that little problem.
The unit itself is about 2 inches shorter than a full rack of carbs. depth and width seemed to be ok.
I will let you know how the dealer responds. For now if anyone was thinking about it I would say not yet.
Good news is I did get one of the bowls clean

Perfect for cleaning jewelry is a great selling point. Buying one just for carbs is not going to pay off. It cleans so many other parts.
