1st car/bike accident

Any time you come through a bike accident with all your wits about you, it is a very good day.

Amen to that!

We all know the risks involved every time we ride ...

But, I suppose for most of us, the reason we ride anyway is ... the rewards of riding outweigh the risks.

But you're still here and able to post about it ... that's wonderful!

The damage to the bike can be repaired ... your body parts are much harder to replace!

Well after 40 years of riding street bikes my luck ran out yesterday and I was hit by a car on my XS1100SF. Luckily, I am still here, 2 seconds later and I'm not sure I would be posting this.
Thank you all for all the advice you've given me for repairs to my SF. It's been running and looking great.
Please everyone be careful out there because cars really do not see bikes. As my car driver stated along with wanting to sue me for damaging his BMW, as the state trooper told me in the hospital. Probably a good thing I didn't get to talk to the Beemer driver.
Anyway please be careful out there everyone.

Fortunate to hear your doing okay! My luck ran out after 50yrs. of riding. She decided to make the left turn from the left turn slot...........just as I got there. The T-bone impact threw me 30+ ft. vertical and came down hitting like a pumpkin. This was 23rd of June. Spent 2 months to the day in hospital......exloded femer, exploded forearm bones, broken nose, broken shoulder and nose, frontal brain damage, ect. Spent two months to the day in hospital. Everythibg healed with some additional plates and rods in hip and also in forearm. Still doing re-hab and may be able to get back on the other bike(1100 Venturer,81 I bought new. The ST was turned into a wad from accident. Thanks to ATGATT or I would'nt be here to type this. Be careful and vigulent out there while on two wheels. Fortunately, I have no memory from a quarter mile prior to impact, which may be a good thing. Dean R. was behind me a couple vehicles back. Hopefully I be able to negotiate the Venturer well enough to ride the annual Toy Run first Sat. of Dec. If not, I accept that reluctantly also. Remember, it's not if, but when, and definitely don't forgrt, it's ATGATT! For me, so much as a tip-over or trip and fall, my permanent wheels WILL be a wheel chair as has been warned by the surgens! Be very alert and vigulent out there while on two wheels!. Save the fast track type riding FOR the track only!!!

Moto....Thanks for sharing your story, you are one tough SOB. I hope your rehab is helping you heal and not causing you to much pain. You are in my prayers and after hearing your story I definitely count my blessings.
I was in the right hand lane of a two lane road with a double yellow line. I was slowing down to turn left into a driveway by crossing the left hand lane. My directional was on, I remember it blinking on my dash. I started to make my left turn and hit the passengers side door post of the bmw that decided to pass me from behind in the left hand lane. I and my bike rolled down the length of the car. I went down after the car passed. I still am having a hard time coming to terms with why he decided to pass me in the left lane from behind me on a double yellow line all he had to do was pass on the right. I don't get it.....
It definitely scared the crap out of me, but much to my wife's displeasure
I'm nor ready to give up on riding yet, but it sure is going to make me watch out even more for cars around me.

+1!............from a herendous t=bone from a driver making a left turn from turn slot June 24th! Hospitalized for two months to the day. I was on my ST and it was classified as totaled.....which I totally agreed with. Having two t-bone instances(another left turner) with same bike over a 10yr. period of ownership, figured some bad voo-doo was attached to bike. Still have the Venturer with same mileage as ST had before crash. It has NEVER been down, so that will be my futurer ride. Full coverage ins. paid the book value($5,150) on the STeed, so all said and done over the two crashes, I was paid some $2850 for the two crashes including its original cost. Stll, metal plates in hip,back and forearm andhaving a hitch in my get-along was NOT a way of profiting! You all keep a good eye out and don't assume your seen! Having some 50+ plus years dirt and street. just assume your NOT seen!

Amen.....Moto, I totally agree we must assume cars don't see us. Also after having now looked at the condition of my full faced Shoei helmet, had I been wearing a skull cap type helmet, I don't think my jaw would be in a usable condition. Everyone, remember, ATGATT, it MATTERS for our safety. Be safe everyone and ever vigilant. AND have a great time.

Had my big scare a little over a year ago. Not my first, but my worst. My Triumph was messed up pretty good. I was really, really sore after bouncing off a car.

Rebuilding the Trophy was a project for mind and body rebuilding.

I remember when I bought my first street bike from a dealer. I was about to head out on it and one of the parts counter guys walked out talking to me. He said "people DO NOT see you" and it's when not if you'll get hit!! Man brand new bike just about to head out and kinda peed on my parade a little but boy did I hear what he said! After riding for several months I had a few very close calls the worst being when a lady in a minivan full of kids pulled out of a parking lot right in front of me! I locked the rear brakes and slid side to side right with in a 1" of her car door. She had the look of terror in her face as I know I did. She had locked her brakes up too when she seen me sliding toward her. She rolled her window down and said "oh my God I didn't see you" I said that's ok and she rolled the window up and left. It scared me guys! I still ride but try my very best to watch everybody driving a 4 wheeler or bigger! Can't wait to get my XS going! Glad you made it out Motoman!!

Most welcome Ron! I think not going any faster than my angel could fly was more of the deciding factor. Either way, up on two or three wheels bumps up being on the losing end. As I've heard from other accident victims, having no recall of the accicent has me in the same catagory. Dean R. from upper New York state was two cars behind me on his STeed and witnessed the whole incident. Him having some medical backround sounded to be of imprtance initially till EMT's arrived on scene. Unfortunately, no recolition of that either being unconcious.

Hoped that helped you remember that FRONT brake IS the main stopping brake. Rear is used for added bike antics.

Yes, Yes and Yes!! LOL. It happened so fast I hit the rear brake and never touched the front brake. Now everytime I slow or come to a stop I use both brakes. I'm hoping that will train the old muscle memory

Well after much thanks to east coaster for much of a new front end. I'm starting to get the old girl (79 XS1100SF) ripped apart and with all your help put back together. Can't wait to be on the road again.

Irregardless. the circumstances, front brake FIRST with added rear ONLY if necessary.

My XJ had linked brakes so using the rear brake really does help to get you stopped.Saved my bacon on numerous occasions...some folks dont like linked brakes but they make for a very well controlled stop even in panic mode....
