The oil is dripping down over top of everything from the air box.
There's way too much oil in it! All I had to do was go over to one of the other bikes and compare but....

Not trusting the sight glass, the first thing I did before I started this thing up was to remove the oil cap and look down inside and saw oil, way down in there!
I dipped a screw driver in and brought a sample out and it looked and felt ok, so i put the cap back on and moved on with the next step.

OK, now that I have totally embarrassed myself!
    Tomorrow is another day

Is there a way to actually figure out how many xs's registered and running in country.... I wish mine was brand new.I love this bike...
they do bring more money and the ones that bring in the most are those which are as close to OEM as possible...I have been seeing alot of upward valuations in the past year...and so it just depends upon who has the deep pockets and who does not...and ofc condition and originality win the big bucks

Welcome Bob...your bike is close to OEM it looks darn good to me... alot of variables but from what i see 2000+ IMHO...and Ian I went to Mich CL and i could not find 30 XS11's forsale...i searched every city that is listed in Mich CL so that sounds a bit unrealistic to me...They are not the average UJM..what you fail to realize is the pedigree of the XS1100...It was the 1st Litre plus Superbike to come to our shores...95hp and 11 second 1/4 miles were unheard of back in 1978..these quickly became the dominant force in all the european racing circuits...beating out the likes of Hondas behemoth 6cyl CBX...and Ducati and others I am forgetting...No other original UJM has this pedigree...aside from that Yamaha over engineered these bikes and because of that they ceased production after only 5 yrs...After the XS11 planned obsolesence was the name of the game ($$$$)

          Cycle Magazine

Thanks MadMax for your comments. I am not anxious to sell but I cannot afford to keep all 3 XS's. Your estimate of $2000 is good to hear...I'll have to let it go if I get an offer close to that. But I'm not holding my breath!

I thought you guys might get a kick out of seeing this magazine that was included in one of my MNS purchases:

The original March 1980 edition of "CYCLE" magazine featuring the XS1100
on the cover. (I just had to display it on my bike for you!)

ha ha ha....I was right on the money...and i am right that the valuation on the XS/XJ1100s are rising...and those out there willing to pay the price is further proof that these are anything but your run of the mill UJMs'....

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you there ...

I've noticed prices on nice Elevens slowly climbing over the last few years ... it's a pleasing trend for us to see.

Welp, I am the one that bought this bike.

I spent the last many years in the Harley world, new and old. I burned out. Too much wrenching and not enough riding. Admittedly, I enjoy the older Harley's much more than the newer ones, and that's really the problem. Finding good quality replacement parts. Either they don't exist or they are expensive.

So, after much deliberation, I packed it in and went back to my roots...Japanese machinery.

I had/have two Yamaha SR's before I bought the XS11. One original '78 and also bought one of the brand new '15 models.

The SR's are great machines. The only aspect I don't like about them is long distance touring. Not a lot of fun, especially when bigger (HUGE) vehicles are breathing down your neck on the interstate.

                        So, I started a quest.

The touring bike I wanted HAD to have shaft drive. No chains for distance work.

Had to be air-cooled and simple (It's all relative compared to modern bikes) so that narrowed the search.

I also wanted a bike that wasn't molested beyond reproach.

Basically, it came down to two bikes (and admittedly, I had just viewed a Harley before seeing the Yamaha that day...maybe a subconscious goodbye) and a deal was stuck with Bob.

I don't plan on modifying the bike. Just simply continuing to go through it to make it sound and solid for distance work in the coming years.

Glad to have you aboard, Brian ...

As I alluded to before (in response to your first post), many here use their Elevens for long-distance riding ...

And, as long as they are properly cared for, the bikes handle it with ease.

Yes, the SR is a fine machine ... but for eating up highway miles, the XS11 is worlds better, as you will no doubt discover.

You're really going to like your new acquisition!

                          Again, WELCOME!
