  • Look what I found! (xs1100F)

Hello everyone, Newbie here, this is my first post.
I finally managed to get registered, Thank You!

And thank you for such a great site.
It is invaluable source of information for amateurs like me
that have this addictive classic bike hobby.
I just found my 15th project (over a 6 year period).

It is an all original 79 standard (except for the coils)
that has been in storage for 30 years and only has 10800 miles on it!

I'm just getting started on it and happy to say that I was able to get it running.
    The motor sounds good!

It's not for sale yet but most likely will be in the near future.
I'm curious as to what you guys think it might be worth?
That may not be a fair question since every market is different but
I'm in Pittsburgh, PA. if that helps.

I wanted to post pictures in the site's photo section but apparently that has been disabled.
I'm sure there is a way to embed photos in the thread but I'll have to research that process but in the meantime,
I opened a photo bucket account to show you my new "find".

    And for the MNS fans,
Here are my other two 1100's

Welcome Bob, I too live in da burg Crafton to be exact.

Nice find but the season for selling is coming to a close. Hang on to it till Spring and it'll sell itself.

Now for the price it depends what you put into it and how original it stays.

As for posting pics someone with better skills than I will be along to point ya in the right direction.

      Bob,
I've "fixed" the first image for you. I'll let you try the second one.
From your photobucket account, click on the photo you want to post, then, on the right side, click on the box with the "img" and it will then say copied.
In the post, look for the square with the yellow sky and mountain, click on it, and paste the location you copied into it.
Nice find! and welcome to the site.

          what its worth

Hello from the West Coast,,,,since no one has chimed in on price,,,I am guessing 1000-1600 would be a good average price for the bike. As mentioned, Spring is better pricing as PA. is going to end riding season very soon. Please sell it to someone who appreciates these bikes and not into chopping them up into bobbers, etc. The bike looks nice overall, hope it runs as well. Good luck on the sale,,, Mike in Sun Diego

The purists will argue their point, but me being younger and having more bikes than most (24 bikes now) my take on it is that they are not singled-out by much over any of the other UJM's. I can get on Michigan's Craigslist and find over 30 listings for XS's and XJ's. The same argument can be made for Honda CB's, and Suzuki GS's, and Kawasaki KZ's. The market was flooded with them. Some clown was advertising a XS1100 in Detroit the other week being "fully restored" for $7200. Curious, I asked for pics of the bike. Short story: Mac exhaust, King & Queen seat, rear touring turn signals, and a 1981 final drive. Engine was shiny though. So, someway, somehow someone gets it in their head that these bikes are worth money because they're old, and someone bought it for a lot on an ebay auction. Look at some beautiful classic cars for example. They're classic and restored, yet lose value, while other's gain. I don't see the XS1100 ever being a collector bike. Sure, people give it a thumbs-up , but why isn't the 650's, 750's, or the least-produced 850's a collector bike, or sold at collector prices? I'll save my money for an FJR or ST, rather than throw-down $6k for a restored XS.

Opinions vary. You don't see a lot of OTHER 35-40 year old bikes on the road that can hold their own with the plastic, fuel injected, computerized, robo bikes though.

Thanks everyone for all of your feedback.
It amazes me that these old powerful classic bikes that we love are not worth a lot more.
Apparently they are worth hundreds and not thousands, even after we put hundreds of hours of work into them!.
But then it is a labor of love, an enjoyable hobby....not about money at all.

Thanks Ray for your instructions about posting photos. I am going to try to post one now
of my brass float post repair. I'll bet you have never seen anything like it before.
And it works! I synched the carbs yesterday, going to rebuild the rear caliper today and hoping to
take the first test ride tomorrow.

I am at the Barber Vintage Fest. There are probably 70,000 people here. Mr. Bill has his XS1100 cafe at Ace Corner and I have my Special. That's it. The XS1100 is either unpopular or rare. There are plenty of KZ's and GS's, some with big price tags on them. This is my observation here and the place is so big I can't see absolutely everything.

For the second time in as many weeks... I went to Warm Springs, GA and had several HARLEY GUYS coming over to look at my DUCK ask questions and take photos of it. These guys have THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars in their Harleys and they are taking photos of my XS11.

                          WELCOME, Ranger!

                          Very nice F ...

I agree with those saying it would be best to wait until spring to sell the bike ... you'll likely get a much better price.

OR ... you could keep it, you know ...

                            Welcome, Ranger!
If I could, I'd keep it, but you can only ride one at a time, and to quote a previous post, "Your MNS is SWEEEEEEEEET!!!!!" So if I had to ride one, it would be the MNS. I have an '81, and I have to say, yours is the only bike I've seen that looks better than mine. I like your military bike too, but I'm an OEM freak, and I can't help but wonder what a stock MNS is going to be worth many moons from now, once people really get into a retro kick. Like the other posts in this thread, yes, there are a lot of our bikes, and they are under-appreciated, but I'm guessing that one day a primo MNS is going to fetch a handsome dollar. (That is if anyone would be insane enough to part with it!) I've got a '95 Impala SS, and my '81 LH, serial # ...000103, and I've decided the MNS is the "Special" one, so it's going to get the "Special" treatment. Puns intended.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome to the site and also the nice compliments.

Today I put the 79 standard XS back together and took it for the first test ride.

                              The good news is:
The bike runs ok and shifts ok and the motor sounds good and the bike pulls strong.

                              The bad news is:
It smokes like crazy! there is an oil leak somewhere on the left lower half of the motor to the rear of the main motor, more in the area of the clutch and tranny, or possibly the middle drive? it seems to be coming from the left side above the footpeg/shifter area. oil is splattered all underneath and dripping on to the ground. Looks like I am going to have to degrease and pressure wash everything to even begin to locate the leak!

Maybe this "find" wasn't as great as I first thought!
