These 3 guys from New Jersey quit their jobs for this 4 month, 25,000+ miles trip around the States. They have a blog and goFund me helping them. They had been to the Keys and were going to Prudhoe Bay Alaska!

If you can Find one, the older Winchester gunpowder cans are steel and can be used to hold solvents or fuel...
I have a couple that are full of a solvent mix that is way harder on cans than gas and they've been working well for the last several years...

Stock exhaust, stock airbox, XJ sump, 78E carbs, Xs1100RH seat, Bosch superhorns, 5/8ths front M/c, braided lines, sintered SBS pads, drilled discs, progressive springs, 8" 50w HID headlight 4300K, 2 x 50w HID spiral driving lights, KONI shocks, Spade fuse box
*Touring mode - Plexistar 2 screen, Gearsack rack & bag & saddlebags, homebuilt towbar
*"The Keg"- UC torana hubs, XS11 discs, Tokico 4 spot calipers

Come on guys, the wedged bit of the trailer carries the esky, and what goes in there is way more important than extra fuel.
It isn't too thirsty with the trailer on the back. I did some figures a while ago on a couple of trips with it. The first one which included some spirited riding over the sportbike mecca in brisbane's hinterland (Mount Glorius) netted an average of 34mpg, and a more sedate run down the highway returned 38mpg.
