    Mirrors

This bike came with these mirrors from Anaheim Motorcycles in 1978. The mirrors do have Yamaha's logo stamped in them in the back.
The bike is really looking good. You did a great job. Definitely a keeper.

The original mirrors for the Standards were round. The ones on your bike now are the type that were used on the Specials. Never did make sense why Yamaha did that? The rectangular (Special) mirrors make more sense on the Standard considering that the gauges, turn signals, and headlamp are NOT round.

I don't know what they put on in Japan, I missed that day at the factory, but these ARE original Yamaha mirrors with the logo on them.

I personally think these work better with the standard considering it's rectangular headlight and signal lights. Maybe somebody at the factory thought that too, maybe it was an option. Does anybody have any insight?

One thing I'll note about the factory mirrors.... The ones on yours (which were a Yamaha replacement type for the drum-front-brake bikes, not OEM to the XS) have the same length stems on both sides, which puts the master-cylinder side mirror higher than the clutch side (visible in the pic). The OEM mirrors had two different length stems; the brake side is shorter to allow for the raised mounting point, putting both mirrors at the same height. Like Ray said, a detail....

Very nice F.... Fix the mirrors and it'd be perfect... LOL

If you want square mirrors with the right stems, look for a set off a Special.

                Well, good eyeball there.

I had a hard time measuring, so I cut a piece of wire and bent it to the shape of the stem. The vertical section on the right mirror's stem is a few mm's shorter than the left one.

                    Mirrors

The good news is: If you decide that you want to change to the round ones, aftermarket replacements are available on eBay and elsewhere.

I would not go aftermarket on this bike. I checked around already but only found one round OEM mirror. I will leave these. I do prefer them to the round ones, and they are Yamaha mirrors that this bike came with anyway.

                        In my humble opinion

                        the mirrors match the bike.

Why screw with something that looks good rather than stock and to be honest the only people that are going to notice are here on the board.

That bike is gorgeous!! How cool to find something like that with only 318 miles on it. How did you find it and do you know its history? Wondering why the PO hardly rode it? Don't worry about the nitpicking, the standard fans on the site are quite knowledgeable and every single one of them is jealous and drooling right now.

                              about the mirrors

If it were my bike, I'd leave them on there too. The end caps on the stems are missing. You're going to get water down there if you don't address that.

If interested, Special mirrors are still available new. Then again, you may find a small end cap at the local hardware store.

That is a lovely motorcycle! Great job!
