I have a 68 Ford backhoe diesel. The alternator has been replaced with a single wire alternator. The wire goes from the batt. terminal on the alternator to the positive on the battery. Will this drain the battery when not running? Should that wire be run through a switch and shut off when not running? All of the original wiring has been disconnected. The only wires on the on/off/starter switch is two wires that go to the starter solenoid.

If you have a true single-wire alternator, that's how they connect. No switch needed, the internal regulator disconnects it when the motor is stopped.
You could install a switch, but it needs to be rated for at least 50 amps (preferable more) or it will quickly fail.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Divided by a common language
Your post had me googling......because.....
Because of the long-time predominance of the JCB marque in the United Kingdom and Ireland, it has become a genericized trademark there, and all backhoe-equipped diggers are commonly called JCBs, while the term "backhoe" as an excavator component is almost unknown to the general public in this context.
How correct Wikipedia is......XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.

And I was just wondering if I need to put a switch in the alternator circuit. lol.
I have another question. I drained the rear end. It was brownish red stuff. I was expecting gear oil. It doesn't smell like gear oil & it's not as thick. Would that be hydrostat? What does hydrostat look like?79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.

Hydrostat should be something like ATF. Check online, but it may use ATF in that application. It may also be someone put in redline multi-vis, so I would verify what is supposed to be in there, and refill it with the proper lube.
Oh, and I did use my dads Mas-Ferg Backhoe in my younger days. I just will NOT say what decade that was....Ray Matteis
