Well, chiropracty has it's place depending on what's wrong. It's based on the proper alignment of the spine and other joints. With both age and gravity, the spine can degenerate and become misaligned. Inversion therapy/traction is another way to pull the bones apart releasing pressure on the spine which "CAN" release pressure on the nerves running along the outside...the cushion disk between the vertebrae can get compressed and bulge outward and compress the nerves, causing pain, numbness, so releasing that pressure can be helpful.

This same kind of compression can occur in the neck vertebrae as well, and "adjustments" can release pressure as well as possibly improve circulation as well...and so if the tinnitus is a result of reduced circulation, that could help it. As to your 13 y/o son....I can't see him having reduced circulation at that age...and the auditory cranial nerve...vestibularcochlear....as well as many of the other cranial nerves all run along the bottom of the brain and insert around the brainstem....which is around the upper spine/neck bone/joints...the last 2 the atlas and the axis which supports the head and allows the head to swivel around, but it could also be a point for pressure upon the cranial nerves. SO...adjustments/releasing pressure there might help tinnitus...IF the cause is pressure on the nerve??

However, I've had cervical spine surgery....C6-C7 laminectomy, and so I'm a bit leary about having "adjustments" on my neck anymore. I have had experience with a Chiropractor before I had my neck surgery....the treatment would help, but only as long as my neck was STRETCHED. Once it was allowed to return to it's normal state my radiculopathy/nerve pain and arm numbness returned. Had the surgery and have been good eversince.

But I'll keep it in mind, and may contact a local Chiro to see if they are familiar with this process for treating tinnitus.

    T.C.
I'm glad you're not one of those who thinks that chiro is quackery since I have a family and personal history of significant pain relief and physical recovery from sprains and compromised disks from the adjustments they perform.
Being in the medical field you know more than most of us about human anatomy. Yet, you recognize the validity of proper skeletal alignment and the effect it has on all the other vital systems in the physical structure of your body. And having been the beneficiary of these adjustments I've spared myself form pain and bottles of pain management drugs which really don't address the source of the pain.
Regarding my 13 y/o, I'm sure that he's endured physical shocks strong enough to cause misalignments that lead to other issues. What with skateboard crashes, bike ramp jumps gone wrong, scooter crashes, etc...
I don't know what the doc did since I made the arrangements and my ex took him in. I wish I would have since I'm very much into physical pain relief and massage therapy... in the family only!!
There is no generic course of action action that provides relief for everybody. That's why you need to have the trust and confidence that your health practitioner will suggest impartial therapeutic alternatives, be they modern or traditional.
I certainly appreciate your concerns regarding adjustments due to your surgery. I was just throwing my experiences out there with the hope they might help someone.

              rocks in our heads.....

              T.C. and friends.
Just so happen to be working at an ear specialists home and according to him...most cases are treatable..As explained to me there are small pebble like things in our ears that sound is bounced off and they deflect those sounds.
These can become disorganized which causes tinnutis..
There are exercises and techniques to realign them..
Also blood pressure medicine in large doses can be effective..
He also said that in some cases it is temporary..
Obviously a trained specialist is the best starting place...
              Hope this helps...

BTW. hope I am not considered a forum whore.lol

                Hey there,

Well, I've heard of the small "pebbles" in the ears....but that they can form inside the 3 semicircular canals that are responsible for balance. Normally there is fluid in these canals....and as you move/bend/tilt, this fluid flows/sloshes in the canals stimulating the little hairs that are attached to nerves that send the signals to the brain. However, folks can form calculi...the pebbles in there, and they can get stuck either preventing the fluid from sloshing where it needs to go for proper balance sensation, or they themselves stimulate the hairs separately from the fluid sending mixed signals, and this all leads to VERTIGO. You experience this same affect with the GAME where you put your head on a baseball bat on the ground and run around the bat...stirs up the canal fluids and sends a bunch of mixed balance signals=DIZZYNESS ensues.

BUT I've not heard of the formation of calculi within the inner/middle ear zone or in the cochlear chamber?

                  A little update

                  Well,

I saw the Audiologist and had my audiogram done yesterday AM. Aside from a little anomaly in my right ear, my hearing is really quite normal and good. HE did some extra eardrum REFLEX and sound conduction tests, and they came all normal...so that rules out a tumor on the nerve, as well as hyper calcification of the ossicles(3 bones in the inner ear..BTW they are the smallest bones in the body!)

I still have the tinnitus though. SO....I'll be seeing my PCP on the 30th for my yearly physical, and we'll then discuss whether I want to try to pursue this any further with an EENT doctor or what??

I mentioned this to one of the male doctors(optometrist) that I work with, and he says that he has it sporadically, will be there for a few months, then go away for a few months, then back again! Oh JOY!!

Thanks again for all of the comments, words of encouragement, and the fact that I'm "deaf"initely not alone in my suffering with this condition...misery loves company!

Now...willl somebody please answer that damn phone!!!

Come to think of it, as kids, we used to sorta laugh at Dad for saying, " Is that the phone?'' when of course, it wasn't ringing. Paybacks are heck---my ear ringing is ''hear'' to stay!

Hate say it but I have it. If there is noise going on around me I usually don't hear it or it goes away and comes back out of the blue or I think about it or read about it.About ten years now I have dealt with it and usually it doesn't bother me much, mainly when I am sitting there doing nothing and it hits then I feel like I am going nutz.
I have been wearing head phones with a radio for over ten years at work to block out the noise and to keep from going nuts..that is probably worse than engine noise.

I've had it (nonstop) for about 10 years now. Also have the (nonstop) accompanying vertigo.
Some days it lingers in the background. Other days (today) it's quite loud.
Reading-up on my symptoms leads me to think I have Benine Paradoxical Positional Vertigo (BPPV) which is actually curable. I was initially diagnosed with Meniere's which is slightly different.
Accurate description for what I'm experiencing:
"The sound of a million crickets chirping at once (behind my left ear) accompanied by a hallucination of motion".
                          Not fun.

Perhaps your rocks have gotten out of position and you need an adjustment. My mother had/has vertigo and she was able to go thru a few sessions by a physical therapist that was trained/experienced in positional therapy for the semicircular canal rocks/calculi. JAT. Thanks for sharing.
